Roger opened the phone lines on his Saturday March 20 show and one of his callers had an interesting idea.

A Pick 5 or Pick 6 pool exclusively for $1 quick pick tickets with carryover. The pool would be run separate from the traditional Pick 5 or Pick 6. Since this separate pool would not allow the gambler to select his horses or purchase combination tickets, it would be more like a lottery and might get folks that play lotteries interested. I would think it would generate a lot of interest if the carryover got into the 6 figure range. I don't know how interested traditional handicappers would be in a pool like this, but non traditional players might get interested.

What are your thoughts?

Traditional handicappers would only wager into this event if the carryover was so massive that any combo was positive expectation.

This is an interesting idea, i think it would work, some players just bet lottery numbers anyway, they might be more apt to do so knowing that no one had an 'edge' on them in any way.

Why not make all bets quick pick. Everybody would save handicapping time and DRF would go out of business.

This would even create a secondary wagering market. Almost like trading baseball cards. Trade the tickets you don't want for the tickets you want.

I like the concept.

One problem for me, though. Attention span of the average player.

Having been a gambler for over 40 years, and strictly a horse player for more than half those years, it never ceases to amaze me how many people play slots, and lottery, just because anything else is too complicated for them.
That being said, I doubt that most people will warm to having to sit through 6 races in a day.

However, in this wonderful age of computer technology, one eligible "Horse Lotto" race (nationwide) could be determined days in advance.
You purchase your ticket at your local liquor store, and your ticket commences on the next racing day, or any day you choose.
That ticket has numbers for the next 6 consecutive racing days.
You watch your race, or see a recording on TV, to see if your ticket is alive.

If a 6 day wait is too long, maybe 2 or 3 races could be run for Lotto per day.

There are different ways to approach this. Definitely interesting.
Might be a way to raise a few bucks, and get an otherwise disinterested public watching a little horse racing outside of KY Derby Day.

Just another opportunity for some past-poster type with admin access to pick the favorites and obtain a huge advantage.

How about reduce the takeout to 10%, and reduce time between races to 18 minutes.

Just re-churning the same dollar, only for a bit longer......

Not quite.

There exists an optimal hold that returns maximum yield. Vegas understands this with their games quite well.

Determining the optimum is tricky, but with some research IRT the wager type, frequency, external factors, etc., it can be derived.

?? Maybe someone just said this (these discussions all seem to bleed together and I (at times) can't remember just how to separate these topics--- that said;

Why not just do away with the horses, the breeders, the trainers, the vets, the pin-hookers, the tracks, etc. and simply spin some balls in a tumbler?

Ollie, I think I've got it!

I'm sorry but this sounds like a horrible idea.

Casual players can already make quick picks without choosing their horses if I'm not mistaken. Why does there need to be a separate pool for them?

Real handicappers want those casual players to be in the same pool because they want to take their money.

It seems like a lose lose situation to make a separate pool.

how many different bets do they need at a race track? in the old days they used to have a daily double the first 2 races, and 3 exactas on the rest of the card. in those days the racetracks were packed and did much more handle on track than what they do today.

since this world is all about action, i would not turn back the clocks. what i would do is try to work a tax deal out with the government where the gambler doesn't have to sign or pay for any winnings at the race track or casino or lottery. let the house pay a higher tax and the government would be collecting more money for the treasury, and the gamblers would be more prone to more action. handles would go up with that move if they can get it done.

Why not high class hookers giving a big piece to the customers, and a small piece to the tracks ? We might rate them on their "turn times." I say we need this, and it's all in favor of a good cause.

Say, wait a minute --- how about giving a slice to the schools, too ? Yes !!!

"Hey, Sugar. Wanna have some fun ? C'mon --- it's for the kids."

why play this ticket for little bucks when I can play the state lottery for much more money?

for the same price you would have to be an idiot to play at the track

Because the quick pickers will be able to bet into a pool knowing that they're not quick picking against people who are actually handicapping. Everyone is on the same playing field.

Then the handicappers might not be motivated to play their own pool if they see the casual money drifting off elsewhere.

It's a wash the way I see it. If anyone here were playing the pick 6 on a huge day like Kentucky Derby day or BC, they wouldn't want the casual money in a separate pool.

THe Choose 6 had a brief run at delaware and monmouth a few years ago. The premise was that you could choose any 6 races on the card and jump in along the way if you crapped out early. Also was a $1 base bet. It just didn't take off I believe because the tracks pools were too small for p6 betting. I'd love it if NYRA or Gulfstream switched to it.
