What sayings do you believe in and what modifications have you made to them. Here is one of mine.
The race is not always to the swift, but it is way to bet.
Goren's Corollary
Bet a little less if the race is on poly.

"The only way to beat the races is to pick your spots."

That's true in a way, but it puts wager selection in too much of a negative light. Over time, I've put a positive spin on it by remembering that, as long as I'm making bets on situations where the public odds or projected payoffs are higher than are justified than the bet's likelihood of coming in, then the more that I play, the greater the chance that those favorable probabilities have to assert themselves.

"Any winning ticket is a good bet."

Of course you have to cash tickets to win, but it's more advantageous to concentrate on wagering situations where the probabilities are in your favor than to restrict wagers to the one horse most likely to win, regardless of its odds.

A great saying that Scott McMannis uses in his classes is "The only sure thing in racing is, you'll never have enough on the winner." Very helpful realization. My addition: '...unless you take the whole pool.'

After a loss, just remember, there is another race coming around in 20 minutes.

And you will probably lose that one, too.

"they are incredible because their hat size, shoe size and IQ are all the same number."

Horses are like strawberries.

These are sayings I believe in.

Think of the window as being a mile away. If it worth walking that distance to make a bet, do it......old saying.

Since i have an original copy of "Racing Maxim and Methods of Pittsburg Phil" ( yes, torn and yellowed ) i will steal two of his :

1 : " A good jockey, a good horse, a good bet "
2 : " Successful handicappers know every deal in regard to the
horses upon wich they are intending to place their money "

It may be yours now, but Damon Runyan first penned it using a take from Ecclesiastes.

"You can beat a race but you cannot beat the races" is a very often heard and often written expression.
However, that being said, I agree with the opposite saying: "You cannot beat a race but you can beat the races".

That brings to mind something I either read or heard awhile back.
What is a pessimist? A pessimist is an optimist on the way home from the track.

Two quotes by the immortal Tom Ainslie:

"Successful horseplaying is a solitary activity...the more social it gets, the less successful it becomes."

The next quote addresses all the system peddlers, selling simplistic systems that promise longshot winners in only five minutes of work:

"Five minutes and you get a longshot...five months and you get an eviction notice."

I always liked, "To be the man, you gotta beat the man" but that doesn't necessarily apply to horse racing.

One of the primary foundations to live by as a horsplayer -

"If you missed the wedding, don't show up for the funeral".

If you missed the high price the horse won at, be careful when betting him back as the favorite (funeral.)

Another: Half of success is just showing up?

"You can eat your betting money, but you can't bet your eating money."
