What a racehorse!! Off a layoff, last at the top of the lane, severe traffic trouble midstretch and wins with ease. AND she beats A FULL field of quality mares.

It's easier for me to watch Rachel then Zenyatta. When she is so far back I get nervous through the whole race. That zig zagging down the stretch was impressive!

Congrats to the great Zenyatta.
At the end of the first inning, it's Zenyatta 1, Rachel 0.

Great Race Zenny!Tell that to Trevor. Remember his BC Classic call where he made it seem how truly awful and unusual it was that Zenyatta was last early in that race?

I'll never understand that call by Trevor...unless he was somehow part of the marketing machine for team Zenyatta.

Yes she looked good and is back strong as ever.
Let the R.A. excuses begin, no way she will she race in the showdown now. Cant beat 2nd string from Zen's stable. Lot of J.J. talk will come down to a no show.
Looks like R.A. will have a hard time repeating as HOY.

No it's 0-0. They haven't raced yet. I've seen Affirmed-Alydar matched stats but not stats on races they didn't run together in. Hmmm

Great race Zenny.

Mike Smith is something else, and I'm not trying to compliment him. In any case, Z ran a big race.

And you base this off a first race off about a 6 month layoff. You think that was her peak effort?
Oh man you probably would've bet against Secretariat and Man O War after their loses. :)

They dont carry weight today. You want weight. Go look at what horses used to carry when they were top horses in a field.

i just got into horseracing in september so i dont pretend to know it all. But, rachel doesnt have the big strides that will enable her to push past closers like zen.

Well one, Zenny runs on syntetics which is a closing track. It's why they keep her in one state on it. She's great on it, no doubt. Two, RA doesn't have to push by Zen because she's a frontrunning or just off the pace horse.

Trevor's favorite expressions: "What a performance," "unbelievable" - said at the end of both the BCC and the Santa Margarita today

Zenyatta's "dead last" - he said this 4 times during the BCC!

Why do we have to base this off of one race? There are many who feel zenyatta has always been the better horse. Today doesn't end the discussion but it certainly doesn't help 1 side of the argument.

Sure and I'm 100% positive that had the roles been reversed and zenyatta lost with a perfect trip while rachel put on a show, you'd be here defending zenyatta saying how it doesn't mean anything.

1 thing today should show is how hard it is to stay undefeated. I know all the rachel fans (especially pace) love to downplay zenyatta's perfect record because she faced easy competition, synthetic, or whatever they can come up with.

Today Rachel was a clearcut favorite and lost. Before you use the layoff excuse remember that zenyatta had a longer layoff between 08 and 09 and won her race.

Of all the accomplishments in horse racing over the last 2-3 years, zenyatta's perfect record is clearly #1

lets get something straight here. rachel won hoy because her campagne was more difficult than zenyattas. that doesn't necessarily mean she's a filly for the ages. she was placed very intelligently against a group of 3 year old males and older horses that were run of the mill. she's just very fortunate that zenyatta's connections were hoodwinked by officials in california, and their own stupidity, to run the races she ran last year. i'm positive, save injury, rachel's publicity team will be eating crow at the end of the year. this poly only lable is a laugh.

The inside 4 paths have been better in the stretch at Santa Anita for some time now. About a month ago they fluffed it up but the rally wide and win stuff isn't as easy as it used to be.

I disagree, Smith would have had to take her extremely wide to go around the field. He ducked inside an waited for a hole to open up in front of him when it didn't he guided her to rail and a clear running path. He looked clear to me when he shot up the rail.

Maybe I was a little harsh, but the one thing that would seem to get that mare beat is to get her stopped once she is rolling - she just looks like and is built like a mare that takes too long to get going again. Obviously it worked out in the end, but when I watched live, it looked like he took the one route of the possible options that might have led to that scenario. I admit, I'm not a big fan of Smith's riding anyway, but it seemed at the time to be a dicey proposition to take that route. I am, however, very glad that it worked out the way that it did.

However, Zenyatta has been in training ever since the BC Classic.
