Take a look at GP race 8 3/10/10, Chapel of Love whose last race was on 2/10/10 @ 5f. How would you compute the closing time [from 4f to 5f]? Note that the first 2 calls are at 3/16 & 3/8 for 5f races and that is the source of the problem since there are no times for these 2 distances. I think the answer is 11 2/5 sec but the pp's I use gives 11 sec. Before I call this to their attention I need some other opinions. There is no problem with 6f races since the times and calls are both at 2f, 4f & 5f. Thanks for your help. These closing times are important in turf races as you know. To be off by 2/5 sec is just not good enough IMO. Rich

There really is no way to know since the times and the points of call don't correspond. This is a poor way to do things and something that should be addressed.

The times and calls as given in pp's are:
21 3/5, 44 1/5, 55 4/5; 6 41/4, 6 4, 3 2, 3 11/4. I think there is an accurate way to find the closing time [last 1f], but other internal fractions can only be estimated. Lets see what others say.

You are right, I forgot the stretch call in a 5f race would be the 4f call. It is the others that don't match up, right?

I think you have to go with the flow and understand there has to be a distance adjustment on your velocity.

I would like to know more about this. Could you compute the closing time for the race in question using your method? Thanks

using the stretch call in 1 1/8 mile races works just as well. just a fyi. incidentallty stretch calls tend to be more exact in lengths behind than 4 fur 6 fur calls in races. although if a horse is fading badly i would take them with a grain of salt.

Perhaps I am going to flop on this one but, projecting might be the best way to address the complex less than 6 panels question. And use the rule of 50 to project exactly who will really be sucking wind on the turn.

I agree. I also use stretch calls in 6 &7f races.

It is the evaluation of a horses third fraction against the field and who will be sucking wind on the turn.
