View Full Version : I can't stand the Ribbon interface in Office 2007

It's horrible.

I do not understand Microsoft's elimination of the menu bar system, as that to me, is the easiest to use, most customizable interface I've ever seen.

When I open up a program, I need to see File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools and Help.

Notice in Word 2007, instead of a Help menu, they replaced that with a tiny tiny little question mark on the right side.

I think that if you have not upgraded to 2007 yet, stick with your 2003 version. Or even the 98 version is probably better (although I do not remember the 98 version so well since I was too young)

I said the same thing when I first saw it. Eventually I adjusted to it and it works fine for me.

But I question that it is an improvement.

They have to change something in order to sell it.
Improvements cost money.

I won't upgrade, that is for sure. I'm sticking with 2000 til it stops working.
That one sucks enough.

My personal opinion is Word is the worst piece of crap software ever released.

I thought the same thing originally, but having used it for a while. I like it even better I think. The most common tasks I use keystroke shortcuts anyway, and for the less common tasks, I like the new interface.

It took a while to adjust. I think how long you used the pre-2007 versions absolutely affects how long it will take to get used to the new.

So, although I still prefer the old, (??) 10+ years of daily use, I am slowly shifting over. Having both 2003 and 2007 on the same new machine, I had to sort of force myself to use 2007. The other new outstanding features determined that.

BTW, when I got my new HP, Windows 7, new keyboard etc., I had to get used to all that as well. Windows 7 is great, but the biggest problem is the new keyboard, The "home, delete, page up, page down" cluster is totally different than the old keyboard. Still am making constant typos. Pisses me off. Will probably go out hunting keyboards. But not gong back to pre 2007 Excel.

Does anyone think there is an advantage to buying just the programs you use. For example, Excel and word can be bought as stand alone programs, (last time I check) (6 months or better).

Nuance makes a pdf program, nero makes an easy burning program and etc.

Is there any real advantage to buying office?

Second qestion, the HP computer in a touch screen is fun to play with but is anyone haveing problems with it. My repair shop post that it charges twice normal to work on them. Is that the norm?

thanks

I went from Office 2000 to Office 2010. The Ribbon took some getting used to but now I find it's better. And I really like the graphing, reporting and stats improvements in Excel. I may just buy Excel, though. I don't even use the other programs in the suite.

I have used Excel for many years. When I went to Excel 2007, I was a little shocked at the changes, too. But, it took very little time to get used to it.

I have Excel 2003 and 2007 on my machine and I prefer 2007 immensely. The only time I use 2003 is when working on AllData PPs for the users who haven't upgraded to 2007 yet.

Quick Tip if not using the ribbon:

When using Excel 2007, place your pointer on the tool bar at the top and roll the mouse scroll. You can move through the menu items much faster.

There are also a number of free "pretty" pdf quick references available for Excel that group keyboard shortcuts.

I personally am used to the ribbon, but.....

Some code by John Walkenbach that approximates the older menu. Tried it. Sort of

http://spreadsheetpage.com/index.php/tip/old_style_menus_in_excel_2007

"Here's a quick way to display the old-style menu in Excel 2007 or later. Execute this VBA procedure, and you'll get a toolbar that contains the old Excel 2003 menu commands."

Or if you insist on the old.

http://word.mvps.org/FAQS/Customization/CustomizeRibbon.htm

'The ToolbarToggle add-in offers a free 10-day trial. After that, the cost of the add-in starts at $19.95"
