This has always been a Boondoggle....... The City of Cincinnati has been looking into rail for years........they have commissioned studies........and they all say it is a terrible waste of money............

But you know.......Obama magic makes everything work............

Amtrak is one of my favorite lies told by the Left. They always try to use it as an example......... when Congress has averaged 500 million a year in handouts to Amtrak for the last ten years.

Why aren't you upset about airports. What we spend on trains is chicken feed compared to the tax money going to air travel. Let me guess, you don't ride the train, but you fly.;)

Try this one............ people actually use the Airports

The average subsidy on an Amtrak Ticket is $50 bucks paid by the taxpayers. The Amtrak trains run at 20% capacity on average.

$50 buck a ticket, Huh. They spend more than that at the airport just to make sure you not taking gun, knife, or bomb on the plane.

Really interesting, that AROUND THE WORLD, just like health care, one major area is completely out of step with realities in helping their OWN CITIZENS with their day to day requirements.

Once you travel around Europe or read about how trains move thousands in other countries you will continually scratch your head and wonder why these countries are out of touch with this reality.

the high speed rail is a fantasy, a pipedream, and a boondoggle. in case any hasn't noticed people in the US don't prefer to ride in trains. they fly or drive.
I took a train once from Chicago to Toronto and I'll never try that again.
when will people realize that there are many reasons why we are not just like Europe, and its not because we don't spend enough money to take care of our citizens.

That is done on purpose to keep you buying the Saudi's export. There was a time when the Pacific Electric system moved thousands around S. Calif when I was a youngster. STRANGELY, even though it was popular, it went out of business until years later it was discovered oil companies FORCED it out of business.

No other country in the world has freight trains and passenger trains on the same tracks.

Same story in San Francisco. In 1958, the Key System went out of bidniz. Maybe it was a boondoggle, and for sure it would be by now, but it was a logistician's wet dream, and sweet. .

Amen. (Many of) our ancestors chose to come here to get away from Europe.

A new governor says he will kill the train in Ohio and tell Obama to keep his money

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20101016/NEWS01/10170307/Kasich-win-Train-derailed

Despite a $400 million award from Washington to build it, a proposed passenger rail line linking Cincinnati to Columbus and Cleveland may never get out of the station if the Ohio governor's office changes hands next month.

Except Canada, but you must know the cost of twinning it,from sea to shining sea. Most if not all European countries are small by comparison.
Logistically and financially....its a nightmare

In New England, it's HighER Speed Rail, not High Speed Rail:

http://www.sunjournal.com/new-england/story/927271

By the way, when did multipassenger surface transportation in this country become associated with Socialism?

I'm thinking that the highest manifestation of capitalistic patriotism for many is a single driver in a single gas-guzzler making his two-hour commute to his office while listening to an appropriate talk-show host.

IF light rail is so darned good they why doesn't Union Pacific and Burlington Northern get involved?

Gee,...what do they know that others don't.

My best guess is it is not profitable and taxpayers shouldn't have to subsidize another industry.

Tom

If no one but the government gets involved, there is no profitable market for it.

Why does everything in America have to make a profit? Things like national defense, education, health care, and transportation, it could be argued, SHOULD BE and ARE "subsidized."

Government should only be involved in things that we cannot do individually. Like the army, courts, roads, etc. Things that we do not need government for, like transit systems, car companies, the post office, they should stay out of.

They are trying to push through another stupid high speed link from Milwaukee to Madison. Only one or two stops in between. So, the majority of us would.......drumroll, please.......still have to DRIVE!!!!

An $823 million waste of good money, and that's just to complete the system and provide the trains. The estimated ticket would be $45 round trp.

Hmm, let's see. Drive to Waukesha staion (20 Minutes). Guessing parking would be $2. Buy a ticket for $45 round trip. Wait for the train. Ride the train. Catch a Madison bus ($1.50 each way) and mosey along to my destination.

Time spent: about 2 hours plus bus ride one-way. Cost $50 plus gas, maybe $4. :faint:

Or I can just make the 130 mile round trip from my house in about 75 minutes each way and spend, what, $8 each way in gas.

When you reduce these high speed rails to the ridiculous, it really is an eye-opener.
