Here is a table I put together with the number of starters, deaths attributed just to racing (training not included), and the deaths per 1000 starters for the Thoroughbred only meets in California beginning with the 2001-2002 SA meet and running through the end of FY 2008 on June 30, 2008.

Numbers are both main track and turf. My sources don't differentiate between surfaces prior to the CHRB's FY2008 report.

A lot of transcription of numbers was involved, so if you find an error, please accept my apologies, and let us know so corrections can be made.

FAQ:
1. Where is the data from?

A. The number of starters is taken from the appropirate DRF American Racing Manual. The number of deaths attributed to racing is taken from the CHRB Annual Reports available at the CHRB website (http://www.chrb.ca.gov/annual_report.htm). The formula I used for deaths per 1000 starters is (Deaths/Starters)/1000.

2. Why the switch from calendar year to FY after 2007?
2.1 Why aren't the deaths for the various meets in FY 2008 listed separately?

A. Don't ask me, I didn't do it. The CHRB changed their Annual Report from a period of early November (after Oak Tree) through early November (after Oak Tree) to the FY reporting year with the 2008 Annual Report. At the same time the CHRB changed the format of the fatalities table from listing each meeting separately to aggregating all the various meetings at each track into one line. This change also makes it hard to determine that the table in the FY 2008 AR is actually FY2008 and not calendar 2008, as the numbers for Del Mar do not agree, but the OSA and HOL fall meets can't be separated out from the aggregates. This is also why there isn't a entry for HOL's fall meet in the 2007 section.

3. Why are the deaths at Del Mar for 2007 and FY2008 different if they're from the same race meet in late summer 2007?

A. You got me, overall the number of deaths reported for Del Mar in the 2007 Annual Report was 23 (8 racing, 10 training, 5 other). In the FY 2008 AR this same meet had a reported number of deaths of 13 (6 racing [2 main, 4 turf], 6 training [6 synth, 0 turf], and 1 other). In the FY 2009 AR there is a "corrected" fatalities chart for FY 2008 which gives the numbers as 13 (6 racing [2 main, 4 turf], 6 training [5 synth, 1 turf], and 1 other). Overall the "corrrections" printed in the FY 2009 AR for FY2008 deaths changed the number of all breed racing deaths from 137 (77 dirt, 43 synth, 17 turf) to 145 (84 dirt, 40 synth, 21 turf).

4. Where are the FY 2009 numbers? Why don't you include the latest year?!

A. Well, as the answer to question 1 says, the number of starters is pulled from the DRF ARM, the ARM for 2010 (with the numbers for 2009, in particular the first half of 2009) isn't out yet. No starter data, no figures. Okay?

5. Where's Los Alamitos and the Fairs?

A. The Fairs deserve their own table, which I may or may not get to RSN. Los Al? Oh boy, what a nightmare. The pre-FY 2008 death numbers give the different number of total deaths by breed, but not the number of death by breed in each of the three main activity groups (race, train, other). The FY2008 (and FY2009) figures do away with the separate breed totals, and thus really make it impossible to determine how many thoroughbreds died racing at Los Al. Add to that, the ARM only give numbers for thoroughbred starters, so the overall number is low (3531 for the entire 188 race day meet in 2007). 33 horses died racing at Los Al from Nov 10/2006-11/16/2007, so if we were to do something silly like use the total number of racing deaths (TB & QH) with the starter figure for just thoroughbreds we'd get a really silly number. Not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent.
