So far in Hawthorne sprint races the winner was leading at the 1st call in 24 out of 59 races. 25 had the lead at the 2nd call. In route races,7 out of 16 were leading at the 1/2 mile,9 of 16 at the 6 furlong mark. Conversely, 8 winners in sprint races came from 4+ lengths back at the 2nd call. In routes, just 2 of the 16 winners came from 4+ lengths back at the 2nd call.
Hawthorne has a history of this one-dimensional racing prevailing throughout their spring meet. Mutuel prices tend to reflect this, but occasionally good ones sneak by. I'm sure some trainers bitch, but that never seems to change things. Just posted this in case anyones interested.

I make that about 42% winners who were leading at the 1st or 2nd call.

Conversely, 57% of winners weren't. ;)

True enough, but there's only 1 leader(59). The other 24 winners come from the remaining 425 horses in those 59 sprint races.

COLD has a lot to do with that.

Not 24. 59-25= 34

Another way to put it:

34 of 59 winners came not from the 1st or 2nd call leader but from one of the other of 8 (average) race contestants.

Feb. 12th-28th-8 racing days. All fast(dry) tracks. All 6 furlongs but 3-2 @5 furlongs and 1 @5+1/2.
