Kind of contradictory though:

Inevitably, with
such high stakes come increasingly sophisticated
methods by cheaters to beat the system.
“We call them ‘basement chemists.’ They are
advising the horsemen on what to do,” explained
Dr. Uboh. “Yes, it is a great challenge for us
to keep up with the new designer drugs being
illegally developed. We are working within the
legal system, meaning that we are looking for
drugs approved for use; those are the standards we
have. We can go to the market and buy those,
but the ones synthesized in basements are not
publicized, are not out there on the market. We
can’t buy them. So that’s a challenge we face.”

“People think [horseracing] is a very dirty
industry, nothing but drugs, but that’s not true,”
said Dr. Uboh. “We know that only about 0.1
percent test positive. It’s a very clean industry.
Very well regulated, believe me. Horses are very
intensely tested. We don’t leave stones unturned.
Whenever we see something, we pursue it down.”

Seems the article addresses both perception and reality?

Horse racing is no dirtier than any other sport. Track and Field, Cycling, and most Olympic and professional sports are filled with drugs. There is huge money involved and people don't care about rules.

Baseball was full of cheater and everyone knew it, they just looked the other way. The NFL is full of HGH, that is no secret. Guys like Lance Armstrong and 40 year old swimmers like Dara Torres are not doing what they are doing without "assistance". People with common sense know this.

In horse racing, there are trainers that simply move horses up too much to be explained by a reasonable person.

One former olympic track star said every single person you see on a podium is using something or they wouldn't be there.

One former olympic track star said every single person you see on a podium is using something or they wouldn't be there. That may be so...but in all the other sports like Cycling, Track and Field, and the Olympics, the fans do not wager billions of dollars on the outcomes of the events. This clearly puts horseracing in another league and demands that the testing be more thorough, and the laboratories more equipped than they are right now. The veteranarian should not be the most important consideration when one looks at the horse's connections...

We know that only about 0.1
percent test positive.....

"test" is the operative word here.

meanwhile steven mark asmussen is currently winning at a rather humble 11% clip at delta. does that make delta the cleanest..... or dirtiest..... track in the country??:)
