Wednesday's 7th race at Hawthorne fell victim to a timer malfunction. One of many to come from this facility. For what its worth, a time of 1:10.40 was conveniently reported.I timed the race 3 times and came up with 1:10.62,1:10.65,and 1:10.66.I suppose its not a big deal to those not figure-oriented. The 1/2 is difficult to get but my best attempts say 45.60. Also, the lengths back at the 1st and 2nd call for the winner(DRF charts) appear wrong. They say 2 back,3 back, looks like 3 back,2 back.

Doing the timing is always subject to variation even when the sensors are working properly. I have had fans reach over the fence, water/snow accumulation, spontaneous motion from birds picked up to set off the timer, etc.

Hand timing is close, to within .1 to .2 second done on each run

beyond that level you are splitting hairs and it makes little difference at all.

HOW they ran is far more important than the time anyway.

Hand timing is fairly accurate if done correctly, but .2 off is not a very good attempt. I would say any competent person can come within .05 with just a little practice.

To ill-bred, thanks for the heads up. I'll use the info when making variants.

I agree its splitting hairs but I'm unwilling to trust something just thrown out as fact or as close as one can get to fact.

I'll bet Equibase doesn't.

I like your final better - I came up with a final of 1:10.68 twice and .69 once. The half split I timed a little slower than you each time, :46.06, :46.04, and the :46.06 (that quarter pole is set in a funny spot and I tried hard to wait, maybe a bit too long)... if that helps you feel a bit more solid on your times.

FWIW - If I had to report a time off of that video with fractions - :22.91, :46.06, :57.86, 1:10.68 - would be the best I can come up with over three tries and those deceptive video angles.

We're close enough and thanks for the backup. The 1/2 is difficult to accurately time. The mile70's are a bitch to get when the timer fails.

Come up to the roof in the rain and fog with super-positioning of wide running horses altering the line of sight as to the exact point the lead horse crosses the beam. Easy to sit back and tell us all about it

I will wager you WILL NOT BE CONSISTENTLY as close as you claim

Do you keep your TV on the roof?
In this century, we don't have to time races live in the rain.
Do they have TV in Canada yet?

Duh.

Seriously, why in the hell would I need to do that to get a good time of the race? If you don't realize there are easier ways, you need to come down from the roof.

Tear down that roof. Use modern technology.

Another malfunction in today's 6th race. The charts show 1:16.17 for the 6 furlong split and 1:50.40 for the final time. I timed each 3 times and got 1:14.82,1:14.84,and 1:15.07 for the split and 1:49.00,1:49.03,and1:49.06 for the final time-for anyone interested.

Were you on the roof in the rain? Just kidding of course, thanks for the heads up!
