A friend just asked & I don't know - historically, how many horses from pool 1 have actually run in the derby, and for me, of those that have run, how many went off at lower odds than in the pool 1.
Thanks.

The question you've asked would include a great amount of gathering of data. I'm not sure where you'd locate hard stats for this many years.

The NTRA, of course, promotes the future pools as sensible bets. And there are many who question this notion. LOL.

The article is from 2008 and has a couple of stats.

The current list, final odds and prices for pool 1, 2010.

Having only played this wager one time, Monarchos was my choice for each pool. That year, it worked out well. Still, this is a mighty tough bet, regardless how sensible the NTRA might term it.

I use these as a jumpoff point to start my derby fever.
I lay down small money to give me horses to root for through the preps.
Pool 1 I had small wager on Drosselmeyer and a $1 exacta box:
Buddy's Saint/Conveyance/Drosselmeyer/All Others.

I've had the worst luck possible in recent years including the injuries of Into Mischief, The Pamplemousse, I Want Revenge, and Georgie Boy.

I only use the future pool to take small swings with very high odds horses. Only ones that I think could progress to a legit threat by Derby day, as opposed to automatically throwing a few bucks on the highest odds horses.

Played one horse, and one horse only in last year's Future Pool 1. He happened to close out at the highest odds in that pool at fifty something to one. Yep, it was I Want Revenge.

On Derby morning, I had the ML fave at even higher odds than the inconceivable longshot MTB went off at when he won the Derby that day.

That sucked.
