He was just on the Gulfstream Park simulcast.
Unreal, they let him talk.
He finished by saying something to the affect of "at 20-25% takeouts I don't care who you are, you aren't going to win betting into American pools."
He said racing is dying here because the horsemen and tracks control things and they don't make decisions that are friendly to customers.
He also said that until bookmakers and exchange betting comes to America, the game has no chance to grow and will continue to die.

I'd love to see TVG put that interview on their Youtube site. It was awesome.

John McCririck...he's such a quiet unassuming man.

His pre Breeders Cup "Zenyatta cant win" rant was one of the funniest things I have ever heard and the only flawed aspect was that he was wrong......doesnt seem to be wrong with the things he said about racing here, though......

He's got a great point though, whatever anyone thinks about him. Exchange betting just doesnt appeal to me, however, bookmakers do...and why not?
Imagine if TwinSpires or Youbet or XpressBet had their own odds.

He pointed towards the new casino and said that without casinos racing would be gone in America.

I thinks it is like a lot of things when bailouts(slots) occur......things would have fallen apart, many tracks would have closed and the best, most well run ones would have survived.....dont think that would have been such a bad thing.

He's right. Think of how much more the US handle would lose if American citizens were allowed to sign up for Betfair.

More than 1 dollar i'm guessing. :p

BetFair isn't the answer because there are no exotics.

BetFair isn't the answer because there are no exotics.
There wouldn't be much money that is added to the tracks or horsemen's bottom line from Betfair revenues. And one could argue that Betfair may cannibalize some of the parimutuel pool.
But where Betfair can be beneficial is by bringing in new customers who will begin to follow and play horse races.
The fact Betfair doesn't have exotics is a plus, because players who like big priced horses or are torn between two or three horses may rather play exotics into the mutuel pools.

Another thing to keep in mind is that purses are subsidized in the UK. Hardly any of the purse money comes from betting there. But more people are interested in horse racing per capita there than over here across the pond.

Purses are 1/4 betting handle in Canada (thanks to slots).
Purses are about 12% total handle in the US.
Purses are about 1% the total handle in the UK.
Per capita though, UK residents bet around 6 times as much than US residents.

Suprised they didn't cut him off, I think Alyssa just got a one way tickey to chicago at meets end, and Caton B. gets a call on the carpet if not the door like so many gm's at gulf get, including her husband.

All registered betting providers make Levy payments and the majority of the bigger betting providers, Corals, Ladbrokes, Hill, Paddy Power , Sky bet, Bet 365 Betfair, WBX and the rest making a few bucks sponsor races

Both revenue streams come via betting and this money is in the main used as Purse money.

Levy falls, less money for Purses.
