Yonkers 2/11 Race 1: So what exactly is detention for a horse?

When a horse has to report for detention, can he read or does he have to just sit there? I can see it now, Breakfast Club, the harness racing version.

Here's a link to the Detention barn regulations at the Meadowlands (http://www.meadowlandsracetrack.com/Horsemen/barns.pdf), I'm sure they vary slightly for Yonkers and NY.

But it doesn't explain why they are put there in the first place (unless I missed it). Is it drug related?

Some place on this vast internet there is an NY-PRC website which provides particulars of horses that are required to be held in the Detention Barn prior to the races.

Unfortunately, I've no interest in such matters.

Could be a drug issue, owner issue or trainer issue, and it don't even have to be the current owner or trainer.

I believe some these horses are listed in the weekly USTA Fines and Suspensions (not positive), however the time between an imposed penalty and the publication of same penalty could have long since passed.
