1. Chinese Bandits were the LSU Tigers 1958 Nat'l Champ defense if I remember. Maybe they were a special teams unit, but in 1958 the defense and special teams were probably the same guys.

6. Pancho Gonzalez was a great tennis player. Dont know who his foil was...Arthur Ashe??

Damn... I'd heard that Coll Papa Bell line and couldn't remember it.

BTW, here's what HE said:

"They used to say, 'If we find a good black player, we'll sign him.' They was lying." - Cool Papa Bell

The Penguins

Great game, though

That little barb was actually directed at my Steeler nemesis from Pittsburgh.

It was a great game and Ovechkin/Crosby is possibly the best mano y mano matchup in sports today.

Time to put this baby to rest. Here are the answers and who got them right.
1. The "Chinese Bandits" played for the LSU Tigers football team in the late '50s. They were defensive specialists so name because of their "take no prisoners" attitude. (Phantom on Tour and Elkabong got that one right)
2. Old Aches and Pains was Luke Appling, long time White Sox shortstop. (not nearly as good as Ernie Banks, or Don Kessinger, or Jerry Kindall, or Roy Smalley, or.....well, you get the idea.) (Robert Goren and Elkabong were correct on that one.)
3. slide KELLY slide. Michael Joseph (King) Kelly was a Hall of Fame outfielder (although he played almost every position), who played primarily for Cincinnati and Boston from 1878 to 1893. He stole 368 bases. (Overlay got that one right and, apparently, is the only one of us who was alive in the 19th century ;) )
4. Harry Seinfeldt was the fourth infielder in Tinkers to Evers to Chance. (Illinoisbred not only got that one right, but he also spelled it better than me.
5. Pancho Gonzalez's foil was Pancho Segura. Explanation follows #6. (No one knew that)
6. Pancho Gonzalez was a great professional tennis player at a time when there was virtually no professional tennis. Wimbledon, the US Open, the French open were all for amateurs only. The Professional tour consisted of maybe a dozen players who barnstormed and played each other. Pancho Segura was the second best player on that tour and nearly always faced Pancho Gonzalez in the feature matchup at each stop. Pancho Gonzalez almost always beat him. (Phantomontour knew who Pancho Gonzalez was.)
7. Cool Papa Bell was so fast "he could turn out the light and be in bed before the room got dark" (Overall, Rutgers and Elkabong knew about Cool Papa)
8.The "Coal Black Lady" was Imp. Imp was a 19th century race mare who ran 179 times (62 wins) between 1896 and 1901. She won $70,119 for her efforts. How times have changed. (No one knew that. And this is a horse racing board. ) Imp is in the Hall Of Fame.
9. The Wheaton Iceman was Red Grange. (CJ'sDad and Rutgers were right about Red)
10. The "Spotted Wonder" was The Tetrarch. The Tetrarch was an English racehorse who competed in 1913. After an undefeated two year old season in which he was unbeaten and unchallenged in seven races, The Tetrarch was a heavy favorite for the Epsom Derby in 1914. A training injury caused his retirement. At the time he was considered to be the fastest horse ever to set foot on an English racecourse.
His name was due to his coat which was elephant grey with lime coloured splotches. (No one knew who the "SPotted Wonder" was)
Final results;
Illinoisbred, Robert Goren and CJ'sDad each got one correct.
Phantomontour, Overlay, and Rutgers each had two right.
Elkabong go three right.

Congratulations Elkabong, three right in sports is three more than you've gotten right in politics.  ;)

Imp started 171 times. Now days most horses don't even run a 171 furlongs during their careers let a lone run in a 171 races. Amazing!:)
