I've been watching Australian racing, and I noticed there two year olds ran last year. So my question is, do there horses age a year every January. If not when! Thanks

What I should of said "there 2 year olds from last year, are two year olds this year."
This horse trailed as a 2 year old in September 2009 and is running as a 2 year old this year.

In Australia a horses birthday falls on August 1st. The 2 yr. olds you're seeing now will be 3 then.

I believe that is true of all Southern Hemisphere racing. The breeding season is different because the seasons are different. This is why race like the UAE Derby are for 3 year olds and 4 year olds if bred in the Southern Hemisphere.

Their richest and most prestigious 2 year old race 'The Golden Slipper' is worth AUD $2million to the winner and isn't far away in about 8 weeks.

In Aus horses age up on the 1st Aug. In the rest of the southern hemisphere they age on Jul 1st, which makes more sense as it's exactly 6 months transposed from the northern hemisphere date of 1st Jan. Not sure why the Aussies do it differently.

Many poor stallions that stand in Japan are shuffled down there for stud duty which amounts to year round. no wonder so many die young.

Aussie trainers run their two-year-olds earlier than trainers here. A two-year-old might run beginning the third month of a racing season.

Don't they still run races at Aiken for untested babies in March?

I think that's true.

The Aussie races, though, are "official" races in that they are carded as pari-mutual races. I seem to remember noticing that two-year-olds Down Under can begin their careers a little bit earlier than our two-year-olds.

I think in South Africa horses age up on the 1st of August as well.
