You Would Never Have Guessed

Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76 , which is odd, because he always looked to be 76. (DOB: 6/27/27 ) His death reminded me of the following story.

Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buried in a grave alongside 3 and 4-star generals at Arlington National Cemetery . His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC). Nothing else. Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer:

I always liked Lee Marvin, but didn't know the extent of his Corps experiences.

In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima There is only one higher Naval award.... the Medal Of Honor!

If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery.

Dialog from 'The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson': His guest was Lee Marvin. Johnny said, 'Lee, I'll bet a lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima ..and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded.'

'Yeah, yeah... I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is guys getting' shot hauling you down. But, Johnny, at Iwo . I served under the bravest man I ever knew... We both got the Cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross made mine look cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red beach and directed his troops to move forward and get the hell off the beach. Bullets flying by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety. He did this on more than one occasion because his men's safety was more important than his own life.

That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me, lying on my belly on the litter and said, 'Where'd they get you Lee?' 'Well Bob... if you make it home before me, tell Mom to sell the outhouse!'

Johnny, I'm not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew.
The Sergeant's name is Bob Keeshan. You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo.'

On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who passed away) on PBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would least suspect of being anything but what he now portrays to our youth. But Mr. Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over twenty-five confirmed kills to his name. He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV, to cover the many tattoos on his forearm and biceps.. He was a master in small arms and hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm or kill in a heartbeat

http://sn135w.snt135.mail.live.com/mail/SafeRedirect.aspx?hm__tg=http://65.55.72.199/att/GetAttachment.aspx&hm__qs=file%3d699fa0d7-5a05-41db-bf39-8cb71947b8de.jpg%26ct%3daW1hZ2UvanBlZw_3d_3d%26nam e%3daW1hZ2UwMDQuanBn%26inline%3d1%26rfc%3d0%26empt y%3dFalse%26imgsrc%3dcid%253a000b01caa445%252432bc 9980%25245ea4e444%2540ok.cox.net%26msgHash%3dfffff fffffffffff&oneredir=1&ip=10.13.164.8&d=d2120&mf=0&a=01_029644b53a48db37471f775dd480f0bfe5f0ef0a73102 f57a84f6d53ca485823

After the war Mr.. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian minister and therefore a pacifist. Vowing to never harm another human and also dedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm.

America's real heroes don't flaunt what they did; they quietly go about their day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. They earned our respect and the freedoms that we all enjoy.
Look around and see if you can find one of those heroes in your midst.
Often, they are the ones you'd least suspect, but would most like to have on your side if anything ever happened.

Take the time to thank anyone that has fought for our freedom. With encouragement they could be the next Captain Kangaroo or Mr. Rogers.

What a NOBLE pursuit to shoot at human beings and blow other to bits not to mention all those burned alive who were never carrying guns in the first place.

FRONTLINE last night highlighted a new way to trick impressionable youngsters into the the GLORIES or war. The Army closed three recruiting stations in Pennsylvania and opened, in their place, huge video game arcades stocked with high tech War games so that the young ones could learn to KILL in cyberspace and make new fodder down the road

May be, but it's fun to think about how, if things had turned out differently, Lee Marvin would've been punching Mr Green Jeans in the nose, and the Dirty Dozen would've been led by Capt Kangaroo! :faint:

Better never to be there and become another pawn of the war machine. Then, like so many I have witnessed over the years, you can come home full of unsatisfied rage and stress and take it out on everyone else, or dive into a bottle.

REAL character building stuff learning how to kill and destroy. A really good life skill!

That's a noble attempt at evading the intent of the query, but if a group of aggressors come to your home (nation) and attempt to end your life (way of life) -- are you really going to cherish the nobility of non-engagement or dispute the nobility of those that rush to defend your life?

Let me guess, you believe the holocaust never happened and we deserved what happened at Pearl Harbor.

Remember, zilly left the U.S. for Canada during Vietnam and became a doctor. Not to suggest that that was an easy decision for many of the young men facing possible drafting at a time of a mostly non-volunteer armed forces. For some, though, it was probably more easier a decision than others, other than the thought of leaving the San Fransico area in the 60's.

By the way, in the unlikely event our country gets taken over (either by enemy forces or political revolution) and I end up in a forced labor camp, I want to repeat for the record that any other camp worker that talks about how they didn't want to fight or use agreession, I will personally bludgeon to death with my shovel or any work tool possible.

Yup! (daffy voice): "Why, nobody'd want to hurt us or take anything we have. Besides, it's all owned by those evil corporations and rich people anyway."

Heh, maybe it's a little bit good now that our oil is harder and more expensive to get to now than it was in the 1950's & 60's.

Everyone knows it was Doctors Without borders who landed at Normandy and liberated Europe. Belgium had the right idea by inviting the Nazis in instead of fighting to keep them out. Kuwait kept Iraw out by assembling a peace parade.

Yeah zilly, the only thing worse than having an army is not having one. The only thing worse than a war is an invasion. No one likes war.....but as long as one side wants one, they get one.

You tired old coot...who the hell are your, Fred Mertz?
