A little old lady friend will not pay for broadband or a second phone line. A few years ago I thought I saw an adapter that allows phone & net connections at the same time. Anyone knows? Thanks.

since the dial up internet actually dials in, no, your line is tied up with that. dsl service uses a different part of the spectrum and thus only requires a special filter on each phone to eliminate 'cross talk'

I stand corrected on that one! Incidentally, though I guess I could google this, how had the various isps cooperated with this new modem?

Notice the article was from 2001, still, I had forgotten about those special modems.

Wood, if I understand Majicjack, you get a new phone number - that's a no-go for her.

Also requires a broadband internet connection, if I'm not mistaken.

There's a service called "CallWave The Internet Answering Machine" that I used years ago when I had dial up. Use to be free, but now they charge $7.95 a month. Lets you know when someone is trying to call you while your on line, and gave you the option to pick up the call. Worked pretty well. There's a demo at the site. Link below.
