i'm in a hazardous line of work, and can relate with the danger that one feels on a daily basis. when things like this happen its especially tough on others that do the same thing. although in racing it especially saddens me that the people who risk their lives have no health care or life insurance to leave for their loved ones. i feel for his family and loved ones, and pray for their well being going forward.

Over my long career in racing I unfortunately have witnessed some terrible accidents which have resulted in serious injury or death to riders, horses and (as in this case) backstretch workers. My deepest condolences to you Tom in the death of your friend and my condolences go out to his family. May he rest in peace............

Sorry to hear about this Tom. I for one having shattered my pelvis after a 2yr old got spooked during a workout many years ago, it can happen so suddenly.I barely can walk and all in pain. My prayers to the family.

My prayers go out to this dedicated man, and my condolences to his family and friends. We appreicate so much the people who work backside because we know the danger that comes with working with magnificent, albeit unpredictable, equines.

Is this the same Teddy that also worked summers at Monmouth Park? Worked for Dave Vance a few years ago? Freelanced this summer until he broke his collarbone? His safety vest had a Canadian maple leaf on it???

Didn't Teddy Shields have a contract with Conn Smythe's stable at one time, or was he with Carl Chapman?

Tom,

I am very sad for you and for the family of Teddy Shields. I haven't had a computer for several days, and just now found out about this.
I hope everyone that can, will donate some money for the Shields family to help carry them through this very tough time.
This just tears my heart out.
Hang in there, Tom.

Teddy Shields, R.I.P, may God bless your soul.
