Always ask for and accept advice from complete strangers who are in the process of cleaning your clock whenever possible. In particular, expect sage, useful advice from proven liars, trouble makers and those who have demonstrated over and over a complete lack of logic.

Like ALysheba said, eliminate the use of the words "never" and "always". I'd also add the phrase "mortal lock" to that.

The other would be pick your spots and don't bet every race

I got three.

1. You can't beat a race, but you can beat the races.

(get it?)

2. Dont bet against a legitimate even money horse -- perceived overlays in these races are sucker bets.

3. Bring your own beer.

Don't judge your self worth by how well you are doing betting.
Remember you are infinately better than your profit or loss slate.

this should provoke some derision from the posters ...
but
a long time racing pard of mine was told this by his mentor
and
he told it to me ...

and, believe it or not, I still do it occasionally and find that it gives me the most bang for my racing two bucks ...... LOL

I only bet claiming sprints most of the time
so
in the days before simulcast became so prevelant there were long lulls during the day for me between wagers ...

and I, as well as my bud, really had a good time with this ....

ten-fifteen minutes to post

a) take your program open to the current race
b) wander amongst the crowd and especially go to the rest room area a couple of times
c) mark the horse that you hear mentioned ... good or bad .. EVERY horse you hear his name OR number
d) one minute to post go bet two bucks to win on every horse(s) that have NO MARKS

rarely have I bet more than two ...
and I have gotten some nice payoffs ....... LOL

I kept records on this for a few years before simulcasting and it showed a positive ROI ....not much, but green ...... LOL

now, with simulcasting I only do it when I'm really bored and I do it with numbers not names ... as lotsa folks are talking about differing tracks ...
but, most do say numbers ......

try it ... hard to NOT have a good time with it ......

How else could the 1 pick six ticket at Churchill yesterday be won from an Idaho Casino.

Racehorse, your advice sounds like a scene from "Let It Ride"
My advice: Make your picks, bet em, do not listen to others. Live or die on your picks.

Scouts honor.

Handicap the races in advance and have a solid idea who the main contenders are for each race.

Then determine who the value is based on odds and what the horses show you in the paddock and in the pre-race warm-ups.

And if you're going to bet a horse with a bar shoe, require that he has at least won with a bar shoe before.

From one of those "what are they doing now" handicapping writers came this quote:

"Bet a little to win a lot."

And another.

"Maximum confusion."

My good friend occasionally goes to the track with me. He's far from what I would call a "smart handicapper" but he does have a few simple rules he follows:

1. Never bet a horse that has your name.

2. Always bet a horse that has the name of your girl.

3. Never bet on a horse with the name of your ex-girl.

4. Always bet a horse that refers to Alcohol or Money.

5. Never bet a horse that refers to Speed or Heat.

And the number one rule he had:

Always bet the maiden fillies wearing pink.

Have fun ! Don't blame others...jockeys, stewards, sloppy track, horse got bumped, etc. for your loss. Accept losses, you will lose far more races than you win. When you win, act like you've won before....don't scream like an idiot and embarrass yourself in front of others ! Also, always check your ticket after making a bet to make sure you have the right horses on your ticket.

when betting the races always remember..

'Losing races is mandatory. Winning money is optional'

lighten the hell up...if you're not having fun, you think it's all "fixed" or it can't be beat...

Always strongly consider a Bobby Frankel trained horse in a graded stakes race.

Just because your up a little on the day does not mean it's time to start making bigger wagers, get rid of the "it's the tracks money" thinking. Once the money is in your pocket, it's yours, treat it that way.

It is not your money until you spend it somewhere else.
A great mind once said that-here? Canuck or Hurrikane?
I knew a guy who was such a loser that the one time he actaully took money home from the track, they tried to charge him interest on it!
