Amazing that one of their concerns isn't betting handle falling off a cliff.

Of course on their panel of industry leaders/experts there is nobody that has a gambling IQ higher than zero. Wouldn't somebody that understands wagering be an automatic panel member?

These dolts couldn't be more clueless if they tried.

I'm ashamed to be a horse owner in CA.

With all due respect and no disrespect intended (ya right) Craig Fravel is the golden boy of screwing Horseplayers in my informed opinion. If anyone has a recorder please record the meeting so we all can see why we're dying!!

Another "industry" venue that excludes customers. End of interest. End of conversation.

California owners are the biggest dummies on the planet. Why would you race at a slotless racetrack? Unless you own Zenyatta or some other grade 1 winner, you are probably losing for the year. Why not own t-breds who race at slots tracks and just watch those races on simulcast? Get yourself a table in the dining room at Frontrunner and tune in to watch your horse run for slots money.

Getting to physically go into the winners circle is and 'impressing' your friends is not a good enough reason to own horses in Cali. If you HAVE a good enough reason, i'd love to hear it.

I can understand the principle of the matter. I'm against slots, it's not a savior to our sport.

I can understand not racing at a slot track in the principality of the issue.

I also think the lack of purses is drastically exaggerated. people got by with the same purses for years before slots. it's just now we see freaking 20k claimers running for 27k at freaking penn national and we want a piece. that's understandable

what i DON'T understand is running a horse that is not bred for turf, on turf, for less money and not making any money regardless becuase you are not bred to run on what you are running on.

in that sense, yes, California owners are stupid.

Why don't they invite someone from HANA to get the customers view?

It's supposed to be for owners but it may be open to all given the response from Marsha Naify. It will probably be a food fight of epic proportions. I know JJ is going and his presence alone makes it worth attending! ;)

If they have any concern for what the customers think, maybe they could invite a guest from HANA, rather than talk to themselves,as usual.

JJ is always interesting but I think a representative from HANA would be more appropriate.

It may be a good test of the sincerity of the e-mail the "Chair' of the TOC sent you. Otherwise, we will have to wait till its over to see what they conclude is best for us...... I can guess.

Most of the meeting is going to be about synthetic surfaces.

As I read the story,The subjects of most concern are:Satellite Wagering System,Year around Racing Calendar,Track Surfaces, and the future of California Racing.

It is an Industry Summit Meeting

I think HANA should be represented.

Reservation are recommended and can be made by calling the TOC office at (626)-574-6620

An industry summit meeting will be held by the Thoroughbred Owners of California on Feb. 13 in the Baldwin Terrace Conference Room at Santa Anita. The meeting, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is the result of requests from TOC members at the 2009 annual meetings for a mid-winter session to address some of their most pressing concerns about the future of California racing.

Subjects of most concern to be covered are California’s satellite wagering system, the year-round racing calendar, and track surfaces. The format will feature panels of industry leaders discussing the issues and answering questions from the audience.

Panelists will include Craig Fravel and Tom Robbins of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club; Ron Charles and George Haines of Santa Anita; Robert Hartman of Golden Gate Fields; Chris Korby of the California Authority of Racing Fairs; Tom Varela of the Southern California Off-Track Wagering, Inc.; CHRB equine medical director Dr. Rick Arthur; trainers John Sadler and Kathy Walsh; and jockey Garret Gomez.

Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the TOC office at (626) 574-6620.

Interesting. If it does come to past that SA replaces the main track surface with dirt and DMR does not, I will not attend or bet the DMR 2010 races. The indian casinos will get my business for the SAR and AR races I would normally bet from DMR. And the money I save from not paying attendance and parking will offset to green fees I will be paying when not at DMR between July and September.

They put this out in response to some of the emails and radio show comments from yesterday. I already sent out a blast refuting their comments and referred to the San Diego Union a marketing arm for Del Mar.

To tell you the truth I can live with Santa Anita being the only dirt track because Hollywood is basically dirt too. Del Mar is constantly spinning and every time they do I answer.

The next 11 months will be critical to California Racing and whether or not it will survive as a major league circuit.

Ray Paulick carried the article and I commented there. Good for JJ in the U.T.
