Odds on the favorite?

Does any stat guru out there know......

1) Average odds for winning favorites

2) Average odds for all favorites

Not working on anything, just curious.

1. The odds of the average WINNING favorite:

1.048 - 1.

This is out of my sample of 6884 races.

2. The odds of the average favorite:

1.231 - 1 which is approximately 6/5.

This is out of my sample of 19914 races.

So 6884 out of 19914 favorites win their races for a 34.6% winning percentage. Pretty poor considering the odds!

For what its worth, I get a somewhat different answer:

Avg winning favorite: 1.45 - 1
Avg favorite: 1.63 -1

Probably depends on the avg field size in your sample.

Sjk's numbers look far more realistic. If the odds of the average favorite was 6-5 we'd be seeing numerous 3-5 shots every day. I'm not seeing that many of those.
