I know they used to offer a good size bonus to the winner if he or she had a graded stakes win before it.

It was run from 1964 to 1967 and brought back in 1984. The last winner I could find was Hap in 2001.

One more year than that

June 22, 2002: Del Mar Show carried the colors of famed owner Allen Paulsen to victory in the Grade III $200,000 New Hampshire Sweeps in its final running as a Thoroughbred race. Hall of Famers Jerry Bailey and Bill Mott were the horse’s jockey and trainer.

Nice history of the park here

I remember FourstarsAllstars running in the race as well, sometime in the 90's. I believe he won too. I was only a kid at the time. Loved that horse.

That makes it at least two in a row for the connections.

Living 45 minutes from The Rock, I loved when they had T'Breds running there. Friday Night Racing was a blast. Mel in Clubhouse Reservations is one of the nicest guys around! Before TVG, I'd always wait 'til the morning OF the Derby, B.Cup, etc. to call up Mel & get a TV Table... he ALWAYS came though for me!
The Rock Turf Course could be up & running in 6 months, for a short fair-type meet, giving Suffolks Turf & Track a much-needed mid-season break!
I also met Jim McKay there when Marquetry won the $500,000 New England Classic, shown on ABC, July 20,1991. Another real gentleman!

I recalled Double Booked winning this race. This was a tough frontrunner tailor-made for tight courses like the Rock and Mth (or an 7/8 grass course) for Linda Rice. I did a search and stumbled on something called Encyclopedia.com. I'm sure everyone else has heard of it but I hadn't. You get a few paragraphs then are invited to read the whole thing if you sign up (I didn't)

He won it in 1991 and scratched in 1992 because "it came up too tough".

There are a few related articles including a brief summary of the 1991 Baruch, which featured two other of my favorite turfers of the day- Who's To Pay and Solar Splendor.

I remember watching this race on TV, I believe it was on ESPN. Hap won easily, just toyed with the other horses in the race. I know Bailey didn't ride him that day (one of only 3 times that he didn't) If I remember, it was John Velazquez, but I could be wrong.
