From the link on Buying A Yearling:
"The first thing to do is to get the sun to your back," said John T. Ward Jr. "You don't want to be looking into the sun when you're buying a horse."

From the Horse's Mouth:
The second thing to do is get a recent annual edition of the American Racing Manual and find the listing entitled "Record North American Yearling Prices" which lists the several-hundred highest priced yearlings and their subsequent earnings. When you see that practically none of them earned more than a fraction what they cost, or even a fraction of what it takes to launch a "fashionable" breeding career, it should no longer matter where the sun is!
