Good Job!

Although I think there are certain areas where the Mob probably had(s) more integrity than some of the people that currently run racing.

I agree ! The racing managers were installed to protect the public against those who would skim from the top and contribute little to the game.

What is the difference? It seems the public has lost ground. We need leadership with integrity and conviction.

Help! ;)

Well if the mob ran racing it would certainly be a bit quieter as there would probably be a few folks raising a ruckus who would "disappear"

I think it depends on where you are coming from. No one can claim with a straight face that things are healthy, fair and balanced now,can we?

It may be that if enough noise and rukus are made it may be a good thing that benefits all.

Our leadership needs help. we could use some new blood and creative thinking.

The status quo is not an option. I think most of us would agree to that.

Who would be in charge of deleting names off HANA's contact page?

Do you remember the episodes with Ralph and the horse he owned? Tony spent the whole night in the stall when it was sick. Tony actually ended up beating Ralph to death and the horse was a primary reason.

This might not be such a bad idea after all. My reference is Las Vegas back then compared to the last few decades. After Howard Hughes and the corporations came to town, Las Vegas has been run by bean counters with MBA's who are not gamblers. Say what you want, but the mobsters knew how to run a gambling joint, with cheap rooms, food, and entertainment offered, with the casino expected to pick up the tab. Many old timers, myself included, insist that back when "The Boys" were running things, Las Vegas was a more vibrant, attractive place. So, does that mean that we should hire a few gangsters to run things? Not really, but given the state of racing today, the idea does have a certain appeal.

Good post and right on the money.

Many Politicians and Executives who run things are much worse than the Mob.

To be honest, I think if the mob did run horse racing, they wouldn't have a takeout rate higher than 10%. They would grow the game.

Yep!

And we'd have better food at the track.

Can you say "Italian Sausage, Peppers, and Onions"? I'm good for 5 a day with the right bread.

Al Capone owned Sportsman's Park although it was a greyhound track then. The story goes he fed greasy hamburgers to all the dogs except the one he wanted to bet on.

The Mob knew how to promote and they knew how to do business. We would have lower takeout and we would as customers be treated like we meant something. How they skimmed off the top and juggled the numbers was between them and the IRS.

indulto maybe?:)

seriously though things would probably be better. if i remember correctly there was a sopranos episode where they were in the hospital with a rap star (?) and they were talking sports betting. the rapper was betting through pinnacle (?) or something and tony (motioning towards paulie) said that "this guy" could get him a better point spread on whatever game they were talking about.

Yeah, it would be so great. After they sucked it dry, they would torch the place for the insurance. Oh, and do make sure you don't win too much. Real brilliance around here.

Well when the mob used to run numbers, they took 50%. The government lotteries runs them now (daily 3, daily 4) and takes 55%.

Well when the mob used to run numbers, they took 50%. The government lotteries runs them now (daily 3, daily 4) and takes 55%.

The only reason they charged 50% was because it was illegal and there was a very high cost of doing business because of that.

If the mob could legally run the numbers without those problems, takeout would be 10% tops.

Yeah, the tracks would probably all be maintained like Aqueduct is....or maybe they'd go the Vegas route instead.

There seems some idea floating arround here if the mob ran the tracks that the race would be on the up and up. I don't agree. Every race would be fixed. People here I guess could sell software predicting which horse the mob decided would win.

Trainers would probably find more mysterious illnesses among their horses. Particularly if the "mob boss" was tiring of seconditis and losing several grand per race. His own entry hitting the wire first would be a must at some point.

Liquor prices, too, would skyrocket. The mob has always loved making big bucks on alcohol consumption.

And one could probably find beings, other than Ruffian, buried in the infield. Though, the grave markers may not be an ABSOLUT.

Stake races would probably get renamed. Soon to come The Witness Protection Handicap( racing secretary will have to really hustle entries for this), The Gambino Classic,etc.. Also, no claiming another man's horse-it will be offers that can't be refused.

The following text is excerpted from the book, Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover by Anthony Summers.

Excerpt of the Excerpt:

Jimmy "The Weasel" Fratianno, the highest-ranking mobster ever to have "turned" and testified against his former associates, was at the track in 1948 when Frank Bompensiero, a notorious West Coast mafioso, taunted Edgar to his face. "I pointed at this fella sitting in the box in front," Fratianno recalled, "and said, 'Hey, Bomp, lookit there, it's J. Edgar Hoover.' And Bomp says right out loud, so everyone can hear, 'Ah, that J. Edgar's a punk, he's a ****in' degenerate qu**r.'"

Later, when Bompensiero ran into Edgar in the men's room, the FBI Director was astonishingly meek. "Frank," he told the mobster, "that's not a nice way to talk about me, especially when I have people with me." It was clear to Fratianno that Bompensiero had met Edgar before and that he had absolutely no fear of Edgar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My uncle was Bompensieros driver and bodyguard for several years and I have lots of stories that I wouldn't put on the board. I was introduced to him when I was a kid at Tarantino's Restaurant in San Diego. Always the big cigar and all that stuff.

Frank Bompensiero
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Bompensiero

Excerpt:

Bompensiero participated in loansharking and gambling. He also worked as a hitman in San Diego, California, sometimes teaming up with Jimmy "The Weasel" Fratianno. Bompensiero also had dealings in Las Vegas with Cleveland mobster Moe Dalitz, Chicago mobster Anthony "Tony the Ant" Spilotro and Outfit transplant to Los Angeles John "Handsome Johnny" Roselli. In the early 1970s, Bompensiero and Spilotro started a loan shark operation. In November 1975, Bompensiero helped Spilotro murder Tamara Rand, a millionaire real estate broker and investor from San Diego.[1] At the time, Rand was pressuring Allen Glick, a mob front man in Las Vegas, to pay back a $2 million loan. Spilotro shot and killed Rand in her home.

“The Godfather” was compelling fiction, but the real mob is hardly entertaining to those they negatively impact in real life. Anybody remember why there’s a need for witness protection programs?

Unlike criminals, it appears that horseplayers can’t be organized effectively. One can only assume the witless in control of racing don’t need protection from us. ;)
