Had an interesting conversation with a representative from Horsemen's Track and Equipment Incorporated. I asked him about the cost of installing new dirt surfaces and his opinion on banking, drainage, Polytrack, and Pro Ride. We also talked a little handicapping since he also played the horses.

I'm sure some on the Board already know this stuff but it's an interesting website if you want to learn a little about what goes into constructing a racing surface.

The base and sub-base of the old tracks are thicker than the specs. for installing the new training tracks. Reconstructing the old base to its original specs is a very, very expensive propostion now a days. Like any old craftmanship it is cost prohibitive.

But look on the bright side andymays, if the tracks desire to put in dirt they can go with the new specs, since they dug up all the old infrastructure, However, I don't think the base depth for a training track would last for any significant extended period time with heavy daily use and racing.

Anywhere from 1.5 million to 2.5 million to put in a new base and new dirt surface. Santa Anita would be more in the 2.5 range.
