Has anybody heard of the undertaking that the Keeneland Library and the University of Kentucky Libraries are currently doing to preserve old Daily Racing Forms? I read it in Thoroughbred Daily News, but haven't found a "free" article on it. They are currently trying preserve 115 years of Daily Racing Forms (obviously it wasn't known as the DRF all those years) through digital pictures, then entering those pictures in a searchable database. The project sounds awesome. Check this website out for more info, and if anyone has TDN they can read the article or post it here

It is of considerable Interest to the racing folk
everywhere that the Florida legislature
was not so foolish as to increase its
share of the parimutuel takeout at Hialeah
and Tropical Parks thereby raising the total
amount to be deducted from each pool
A bill was introduced which would have
provided fora jump from three to five per
cent in the states share making the total
twelve per cent instead of ten with the
breakage extra The latter runs nearly two
per cent With California making every effort
to reduce its take from twelve per cent
it would have been foolhardy for Florida
to vote an increase The West Coast will
be making a stronger lid than ever for the
better whiter stables and the Florida tracks
would have lost much of its patronage by
raising the take Winter visitors to the
Everglade state take top much of a shellacking
under present conditions without having
further holes punched in their pocketbooks
by an increased takeout

It costs money to do what they are doing. The work of converting the paper docs to digital form costs money and the people doing the work have to be paid as well.

So what happens if they don't get the money, they're going to toss the old forms in the trash? What happens?

Here's an article from the University of Kentucky about the undertaking of the project:

http://news.uky.edu/news/display_article.php?artid=2240

Racing historian and archivist Kevin Martin at Colin's Ghost wrote about it last fall:

http://colinsghost.org/2009/10/daily-racing-form-online-historical.html

And if the project isn't funded, the newspapers will not get tossed...but they will simply continue to be stored in their paper form at the Keeneland Library, and anyone who wants to access them will have to go to Lexington.

"Without further preservation efforts the collection will continue to deteriorate and online access for all but a limited number of these historic archives will not be possible." -- 2:25 mark of video

It's not just a question of the volumes sitting there until the money is found. They deteriorate naturally despite the best efforts of the Keeneland Library's staff. Once the volumes reach a point of no return, the articles, charts, and other information within them is lost.

Thank You for the video and answering an unintelligent question intelligently! Great video! Thanks a lot!
