Mountaineer park now races 10 months a year. It is in the Dec 9,2009 edition of the www.reviewonline.com (http://www.reviewonline.com)

The track will run races from March 1st to Dec 31st.

The track will remain open for training for all 12 months.

Mountaineer will still run the 210 days of racing mandated by the state.

With table games, racing becomes less and less important. They wanted to have no racing for four months. That will be back on the agenda next year. The moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for, because slots only open the door to more and more for the casino interests while the racing interests get less and less.

Considering the amount of money on the table (no pun intended) and the state of the economy, these changes have been slower in coming that I expected, but you're right---more and more will slowly be taken away.

On the other hand, probably not a bad idea for the Mountain to close for the dead of winter.

They had a lot of cancellations last year in January and February. Lots of B horses from Canada go there, so it will be interesting what happens to them....Penn, Charles Town? Especially with no word on whether Fort Erie will open next year or not. I'm hearing they are close though on getting racing.

Might be a boon to Turfway - Canadian horses already run over synthetics, so they might head there.

The Fort Erie horses are usually the ones that don't handle plastic that well.

Looks like Beulah Park will benefit the most since it is only a couple hours away and the horses are cheap claimers.Might be the track to follow this winter with all the 12 horse fields. They also race on tuesdayswhile most tracks are closed.

I wasn't sure of their schedule. But I see they start January 9th after a small break.
Last Wednesday they did almost 2 million in handle. With Aqueduct and Hawthorne canceling today, they might surpass it today.

I was thinking Woodbine.

I was thinking Woodbine.
It is hard to go from Woodbine purses to Turfway purses. Better off wintering the horse than shipping them, especially to blow conditions down there.

Now, if they get their wagering menu into the 21st century, maybe I'll give them a try.

Just a question here, but can we consider these types of things good things? With reduced days running that means horses will go elsewhere meaning bigger fields at other tracks? Seems like the smart thing to do for almost all tracks, downsize to get more?

I consider it a good thing. I fact, when I saw the title of the thread I thought it would be a "thumbs up" thread.

I think it's a good idea.

They will have an opening day.

I love opening day at Canterbury.

I highly doubt that. The new owners have an extreme dislike of horseracing. I envision blueprints of penny slots lining the homestretch sitting in the company vault.
