Tampa is my favorite. Given a choice to play just one track, it would be my choice. Big competitive fields, and turf racing, and not too many off tracks. I'm disappointed in the schedule change. I always looked forward to "Tampa Tuesdays" as Steve Byk calls it on At the Races. They would always get the bulk of the Tuesday simulcast handle from around the country. I doubt their Wednesday handle will compare to the Tuesday handle from past years.

Anyone know if Ness & K. Ziadie will be stabling at Tampa this meet? I hope not... I seem to remember Ziadie being banned by Calder, does this also apply to Tampa?

I plan on increasing the level of play Tampa this winter and will also be making my first trip there within the next 2 months or so. Tampa Bay Downs has taken some positive steps in the right direction regarding takeout and appears it may be a track that deserves increased patronage.

It is a fine comfortable facility with a first class turf course. I have done my homework and am ready to rock. Jamie Ness went winless at the end of the meet after his barn was raided last year.

Any specific angle that could be profitable, which track do horses ship from that do well?

I will be attending in person with a group on Saturday. We have reserved box seats. One in the group owns two juvenilles that will be running.....

I don't play Tampa Bay, but Dale Bennett finished up Arlington/Keeneland meets with a barn full of pretty strong horses. I'd look for him to get off to a good start. Is Ness at Tampa, or is he staying at Penn? He's a bad seed and should be suspended for life.

Yep, especially now that it is Ness free.

Apparently I'm wrong:

MORE DOWNS: Flynn said three-time leading trainer Jamie Ness will return, but 2005-06 champion Kirk Ziadie will not. Ness was in the midst of a probe in April regarding unmarked substances found in his Oldsmar stable. The Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering hasn't announced results of the findings. Ziadie was banned from Churchill Downs Inc.-owned tracks in August after a 60-day, medication-related suspension and $1,000 fine by the FDPMW. "Ness has been issued (40) stalls," Flynn said. "I don't know any more than that. (The investigation) is a state issue so they don't report to us. Ziadie did not apply for stalls; we didn't deny him." Said Ness: "I am in the dark about (the probe) as much as you. I have no idea what's going on. I am just happy to be back at my home track and looking forward to another successful season."

I think Ness will be splitting operations at Penn and Tampa Bay.

Not crazy about high percentage trainers anywhere.

I do love betting Tampa Bay regardless.

My brother lives in Tampa so I will be taking advantage of his hospitality this winter. Being a resident of NYC I will find every excuse to get out of the city and into some nice weather and decent horse racing. Starting to do my homework now, hoping my capping will improve over last year. Did not do so well last year, but at least I know why. Good luck to all and have a great meet.

Good meeting. One wonders how they get so many entries when they butt heads with Gulfstream (but of course many many of their horses are shipping from the North).

I don't think Gulfstream and Tampa really compete that much for horses, there's certainly quite a difference in the prices the horses are running for between the two tracks.

Tampa certainly caters to the blue collar claiming horses more, whereas lots of the horses at Gulfstream are shipping in from other A level tracks.

I doubt their Wednesday handle will compare to the Tuesday handle from past years.

I, like many of my friends, have Wednesdays off and am psyched for the schedule. I've called the office every year since I've moved here (2001) to promote this change. I believe it was the year before last when they set a weekday handle record when they opened one Wednesday in February. The wed handle will crush Tuesdays. I'll bet on that!!

Just moved to the Westshore area and will be able to be on track much more this year :jump:

My strengths are claiming and turf. Tampa fits me like a glove. Haven't done well (didn't play much) the last 2 years. With Zaidie gone and Ness under the microscope I'm expecting a return to more formful racing. By formful, I don't mean favorites.

I'm a pick 4 player and the lowering of the takeout to 19% is a hell of a lot better than 90% of the rest of the country. I also like the long meet. Once everybody ships in (mid Jan) you can spot a lot of trends and you don't have to worry about a horse you're watching shipping out.

My first exposure to Tampa was the Tuesday action. I think it was in '03 or '04 and several of us at this board used to post our picks and kibitz as the day went on. I queried the GM, Peter Berube, about the schedule change.

His reply,
“Tuesdays at Tampa” used to be one of our better days, but recently it has become the lowest –here are the results from last season

number total
days handle

tu
19 3,187,778

wed
10 3,500,342

thur
11 3,202,136

fri
16 4,052,002

sat
21 5,410,004

sun
17 3,737,831"

(Note: I believe the handle figures are averages for the days indicated, not total.) Also, he indicated that there are simulcast locations that are not open on Tuesdays and that having two days off in a row was perceived as a positive by his employees and the horse people. And, he hopes to pickup some Wednesday/Thursday business from California when they are dark there.

Like many others, I am glad that Kirk Ziadie will not be there. The more bad apples we can get out of the game, the better off for everyone.

So the "probe" has been going on for 8 months? They still can't figure out what the substance(s) was/were?

The best thing about high percentage trainers is, they still lose more than they win, and they get bet down pretty much 100% of the time.

Nice race track. The turf is usually firm, and the dirt is pretty fair.
Always great to watch and wager TAM.

has not been given stall space. Ness will be there, his barn was raided at the end of the meet last yr. the reason they are letting him in as they have not come to conclusions yet on what they have found. They have also reduced the meet by 3 days. the casinos are killing them, the idiot politicians here will not give them slots, there giving everything to the indians. Derby lane has already said if they do not get help dog racing will stop there.

Also think the unique style of announcer Richard Grunder adds to the interest.

can tell u where his weakness is for stats i have

1. 0-9 with a layoff of 1-3 mths and the horse is ship in with no class change.

2. 1-20 dirt to turf with no class change.

3. 1-10 up in class plus turf to dirt.

A nice circuit for Pick 4 players would be the Jersey tracks and Tampa Bay.

Monmouth Mid May to Sept 15% Takeout in Pick 4
Meadowlands Oct to Early Dec 15% Takeout in Pick 4
One Week Off (This Week)
Tampa Bay Mid Dec to Early May 19% Takeout in Pick 4

Tampa is a great track to bet, but damn I made a lot of money betting Ziadie in certain situations---I will miss that guy.

Ness is still there? It will be interesting to see if he's 35 or 15 percent. It should be a good betting opportunity either way, unless he only wins with big dropdown favorites. Then it's no benefit to anyone, financially anyway (sorry for being cynical and thinking about betting).

You have to support a track that keeps DROPPING takeout, what we're all asking for. No it's not perfect but it's growing every year and is one of the few success stories in racing.

I guess Dale Bennett and Jerry Bennett will be there. I remember them doing well. and a woman trainer who's name I can't think of.
