John Brunetti said he would open Hialeah today and he did it. Dumped 15 million of his own bucks to dress up the Club House and Paddock area. Large crowd (free T-shirts helped). He has a long road to hoe, I wish him luck. I didn't stay for the races, my business is at CRC.

I think we can all agree Hialeah is a beautiful course. Have to make it a point to visit some time soon.

Are the flamingos back, too?

The Flamingos are back (will Miami Vice follow?)
The goal is t-breds. The need to run two years of Q horse to qualify somehow. That will be now and January 2010, so the two years is like two months in real time.

Brunetti was interviewed by Bill Finley today on Dave Johnson's satellite show.

WPS = 18%

DD and EX = 21%

27% = everything else.

And what ADWs are taking wagers?

Considering how Gulfstream ruined itself by becoming a slots-track, and that Calder is so non-descript, I can definitely see Hialeah reclaiming a spot in the thoroughbred racing scene in Florida.

I'd imagine most are. Horseplayersbet has Hialeah.

TVG showed the races - I didn't specifically check but I assume they were taking wagers.

18%, and about $35k per race!

I would guess that the last thing the TwinSpires group would want to do is help Hialeah in any way.

WINTER:

I noticed that BETAMERICA.COM is offering wagering on the HIALEAH quarter horse races. That's one of the few places that I know of that will take bets at HIALEAH, whether they are an ADW or racebook. Also, BETAMERICA.COM is the only betting company that I aware of, that Canadian residents can bet on the HIALEAH races.

KEN:

I'm guessing a fair amount of horsemen that ran their quarter horses at the recently concluded LONE STAR meet, have shipped or will be shipping some their horses to HIALEAH.

This is the stepping stone for the thoroughbreds to return to Hialeah. Remember, Gulfstream was thinking about going nights in the near future. That would pave the way for daytime horses at Hialeah for a nice springtime meet.

Sure, Hialeah is a beautiful setting. Does that make any difference to the 90% of the market that is betting via the internet or simulcasting? This is a failed experiment from the get-go. Look at the mutuel pools. They have the audacity to announce attendence of over 25K (based on one turnstile count and a count of cars)? The betting sure does't reflect that. P4 pools of $1000 on Saturday and $500 on Sunday?

Brunetti did little but rob horseplayers when he ran the old Hialeah (30% takeout; and, doing a quick calculation on one race Sunday, I make the takeout plus breakage now equal to 23.8% in the win pool). You think that leopards change their spots? Does Brunetti want racing at Hialeah or a casino there?

You want REAL racing at Hialeah? Get rid of Brunetti and close Gulfstream, moving their days over to Hialeah. Short of that, keep wishing in one hand, and watch the crap mount up in the other!

I know Hialeah had its glory days, but people, other than rrbauer, seem to forget just how bad a track it was the last several years.

I posted similar thoughts (takeout very high, racing wasn't much good in the 1990s) on the last "Yay Hialeah is back" thread and got a bunch of "Thank God they're saving the old pink palace" replies, so I guess people just have a romantic view of the place. RRBauer summed up my feelings almost exactly though.
