He's the best at Hollywood Park imo. He seems to have more heady rides on that surface.

Joel has it going on.............but I love Tyler Baze too.........and I will bet against Gomez with both of them............but since I don't bet plastic anymore...........too bad.........Baze is good on the turf...............

Joel has great instincts. He's strong, he's smart, and he's fearless. He's one of the best, if not the best at getting horses to change their running style with success.
I wonder if Vic could let us know how they decide how to ride a horse. Is it just Joel reading the PP's and making up his own mind or something more?

I decide which horses Joel rides. It's not often that actual handicapping two particular horses comes into play. Even if it does the decision often isn't made based on the immediate merits of the horses. Many other factors take precedence such as is it a barn that we do alot of business with compared to a trainer that we only occasionally ride for. There are dozens of different scenarios that go into who Joel rides in a race.

I didn't ask my question correctly.
What I meant was how does Joel decide to ride a horse during a race. I've seen him take a frontrunner back and win and also take a horse that's never been on the lead, send him, and win.
I know sometimes a barn will tell him to ride a horse differently but he seems to have a knack for changing a horses running style to fit the pace (or lack of pace) scenario and win.
He may be the best at doing that.

I apologize for not being up to speed on this, but if someone could fill me in I would appreciate it.
I believe I saw that Joel lost the Oak Tree riding title by 1 win to Bejarano. I also believe I saw that Joel did not ride for 2 or 3 days late in the meet. Could someone be so kind as to fill me in on why he did not ride, or am I incorrect?
Thank You and Best of Luck Everyone!

Joel is an excellent rider.
He is not nearly the rider Gomez is, but he's young.
He is very good now. He's young. He's only going to get better !

I had Vic on my radio show a couple weeks ago, and he said Joel had a very very bad flu and was ill, and i think a couple of other riders may have been sick for a few days there, Bejarano included.

Sorry. Now I get it. Joel and I VERY RARELY discuss race strategy. If we do I'll say something very generic like don't forget to always be patient and try to save ground if at all possible. Conceptual rather than specific.
Joel goes over the form and watches tape of previous races of every horse he rides. That way he's prepared if the trainers asks about his knowledge of the horses past races. He'll also make suggestions as what he feels will be the best strategy. He's very aware though that he's the employee or contractor and the trainer is the unquestioned boss. No matter his opinion he will do what he's told.

I'm still unclear. As I speak of him amongst friends, should I pronounce his name Joelle as in Noel to be correct?

Rosario is one of the best ROI jockeys I have ever come across. Even after the public and the top trainers started catching on. Since Jan 1 of this year, excluding county fairs, I have him overall 21% W and .98 ROI. On favorites 38% W and .98 ROI. From May through July he was 42% W on favorites. By comparison Gomez overall same time period 22% W and .78 ROI and on favorites 32% W and .77 ROI.

Not many things drive me nuts more than a Jock who goes wide into the first turn of a two turn race for no reason. If you can save ground just do it!

Best Jock in So.Cal.
I think you might be shortchanging Rafael Bejarano, who won five meets in a row on this circuit before Joel broke his string... Rafael also had a serious injury recently.
Also IMO, Joel has a better agent than Rafael.. Though Rafael rides more lower priced horses, (avg 5-1 vs 7-1) Vic Stauffer gets Joel on many more live horses than Bejarano's guy.

When Frankel (may he rest in peace) convinced Bejarano to come out to So. Cal. I was a backer of Bejarano's skill against the nay sayers. And Gomez, in my opinion, the best rider over the last few years.
I have great respect for Bejarano and Gomez, but right now Rosario is out riding them.
Yes, Mr. Stauffer is doing a tremendous job securing live mounts for his jock. (Are you still using TG to evaluate horses). However, Rosario is taking advantage of the chances.

Hollywood's 1st race, Rosario does it again (on a pick-up mount). Sets the pace and wins holding sway against Bejarano's mount. Bejarano put a good ride on his mount too.
Not much prep time involved in this ride, just talent.

I am a HUGE believer in Thoro-Graph and use it extensively when deciding which horses Joel rides!
