Little did the do-gooder know that his altruistic act would put him in the cross hairs of the city's largest municipal union.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

"We'll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails," Balzano told the council.

not surprising, this is what unions are notorious for.

the whole service deal with this administration is a crock anyway. it's not really about service, it's about early indoctrination into the statist culture, working on democratic campaigns and causes, etc.

like health care, its not about improving health care or reducing costs. anyone with half a brain can see that their plan will cost more and reduce care. it's about taking control, assuming power, and being able to mandate pretty much everything to do with our lives

I wouldn't want to disappoint you. The union's job is to protect it's members, and to protect it's member's jobs. But, there is no way they can win on this one. In fact, they will lose worse if they win, than if they lose. I think they now ralize this because Balzano said on Saturday that they were unlikely to pursue the matter:

My question concerns that phony piece of garbage Michelle Malkin. Wasn't she one of those who mocked and criticised Obama's call for volunteerism, calling it a ploy to create an "Obama youth". Now she's all altruism, because it gives her a chance to bash Obama and the "EVIL UNIONS :eek:

I would really like to hear Obama's take on this one, since as we know from his own words during his campaign he "has spent his entire adult life working for the SEIU" and will not make important decisions without first consulting them, particularly on healthcare. As we know, they are calling the shots. They are in trouble and don't have the money to pay out all of their promised pensions, etc., so they need gov't run healthcare so the taxpayer can foot the bill. Obama works for the SEIU first, not the American people.

Malkin is anti FORCED "volunterrism". She is opposed to COERCED "volunteerism" whereby the government withholds or grants a benefit based on the CONDITION of "volunteering" for some "public or community service". The "volunteer" would essentially earn the benefit if he complied with the rules, and if he chose to not participate he was denied those benefits.

The difference is that the young lad was pursuing his Eagle Scout Badge by his own choice and got to choose his own project. He was not fulfilling any state-mandated conditions by participating in a federal program or project! That's the difference. There was no quid pro quo arrangement between him and the federal government, such as exchanging "x" amount of government-sponsored "community service" for student loan privileges from the federal government, etc. What in the world is so hard to understand about this?
