I plan to wager $40 on the BCC (only going to be at the track for the one race). I realize some will depend on odds close to post, but general suggestions on the best way to bet?

There is no best or worst way. If it were myself, I would find a horse I liked, and bet it $30 to win, then play some spray and pray exactas or dime supers with that horse on top.

$20 to win on
:10: in Race 5
$20 to Win on
:8: in Race 8
Then go home and enjoy it.........
or split it and play them $10 to win/place
These are two live long shots if you ask me

He said BCC and one race so I am assuming that's the Breeder's Cup Classic (BCC).
In that race, this year, I'm going with 10 cent supers on phone numbers and birthdays. I'm just having a hard time separating the Euro's, American dirt, American poly's and Gio Ponti although I am leaning toward the last one. I think there will be some big payouts today as always.
For $36 you can get 3 different 5 horse superfecta boxes and have $4 left over to bet a longshot to win. Key on 2 or 3 you really like and throw in the savers. Just an idea.
