Field size that is...

For those already complaining that the field size of the Belmont is more proof that Funny Cide has had no competition, here are the field sizes for the other Triple Crown Winners (source USA Today):

Horse-field size

Affirmed-5
Seattle Slew-8
Secretariat-5
Citation-8
Assault-7
Count Fleet-3 (!)
Whirlaway-4
War Admiral-7
Omaha-5
Gallant Fox-4
Sir Barton-3 (!)

No wonder my great grandfather claimed that he ran 4th in the Sir Barton Belmont....

I think the clock is probably the best way to determine how good they are. But I also think the tracks are faster today. I haven't been playing but about 2.5 years so I don't know for sure. But everything I read seems to indicate that the tracks are faster.

Oh yeah ...... Don't believe everything the girlfriend tells ya! :D

Every year I hear the same thing ... you can set your clock by it.
The 3 yr olds are weak. The 3 year olds suck.
I can't remember a year when the 3 year olds were any good!
When Seattle Slew won the TC, they said the same thing, he beat no one -- now he's hailed as a great one.

To me that's just lame -- you beat who you beat. And let history decide who the great ones are.

there is not one thing that has stood out as an exceptional horse.

if there are so many good 3 yo where are they?

it'll be interesting to see how well FC fairs as a 4yo. Come to think of it, it will be nice to maybe see a TC race winner running as a 4yo

Ralph..are you saying she could be lying?

She may be the consummate diplomat though......

Well said Andi, I agree. What the hell, out of 129(?) derbies 9 were faster than Funny Cide and 119 were either only as good or worse. Not too shabby in my opinion.

Good luck Funny Cide, Good luck New Yorkers, good luck everybody!!!
