just checking out some different music sites..thought I'd mention them.

lala.com is kind of a cool idea...they have a large online library, you basically show them your MP3's, then they unlock access to all those MP3's on their servers...so you can access your music collection from anywhere.

Grooveshark, also has a very large library, you can stream any of their songs, whenever, as many times as you like, play full albums, create playlists, etc. Nice site.

you can also embed songs from grooveshark, and/or they give you direct urls, i.e.:

Hands down the answer is clear. You know where I park it Chicky.

I've kicked the tires of almost all and more than often they come up flabby.

From my vantage the best is Rhapsody.
Search by track, artist, keyword, whatever...
Everything is there & oftentimes 15+ interpretations.

Beats the bejesus out of ITunes and anything else I've seen in every genre.

Pandora if you want a sorted mix.

End of thread.....................

Maybe not quite the end.

Here's another you guys might be familiar with. One that I like a lot . . . .

Diana Krall happens to be one of my included artists.

Hey Grits, we are on the same page with Diana Krall, as a singer, she is so smooth & airy, she has the "blues/jazz" thing down to a science, and she sure plays a mean piano to boot....I swear (as an oldtimer) that she is the re-incarnation of Julie London (only better)...I just love those chicks...can't get enough of them..

And Grits, THX for the steer to last.fm....:jump:

fwiw, imo, "Rhapsody" is still the most comphrehensive and eziest of the music download sites...

best,

I knew the first time I heard her in person she was going to make it big.

Now that she has, she doesn't play the small intimate clubs any more. My loss is her gain.

LK, you're welcome. I've spent the last hour at Rhapsody listening to Oscar. The legendary, and an all time favorite, Oscar Peterson.

One can get sidetracked and take hours out of one's day, right out of the blue with one mouse click, when there's 1900+ offerings by an artist one loves.

Both sites are great. I don't have an ipod. Don't really want one. But I've got one helluva lot of cds in the house and in the car. I can load six cds in either and listen for hours. Still, the online radio thing is good too.

Had XM for many years in both until recently when I got tired of talking to representatives in India, who I could not understand. Finally, I said, "forget this, I'm done. Cancel all of it."

The cds work nicely still. And these stations too.

Anyone who enjoys the great Oscar Peterson is good people in my book.

Another way to use Google for music uses a search function to produce downloadable tunes without having to use a file sharing service.

From the website: "-G2P (Google to Person) uses some crafty Google searches to help locate open directories or otherwise shared files. These searches are nothing secret (In fact, take a look at the results, so you can see how it is done."

Typing your song in the search box will result in a number of other peoples' playlists which you can then browse for your selection. Often times it's there, sometimes it's not. Freqently you will find other songs you like from these playlists.

The process is a bit cumbersome--not every link is downloadable, the ones at the top tend to be commercial sites (don't want those), and is not very good for obscure titles, but it's not bad for a rainy day with nothing better to do.

Thanks Mack & Pace.

Live-365 internet radio http://www.live365.com/index.live doesn’t allow downloading (I don’t believe), but if your tastes are off the beaten path (as mine are) you can find some pretty serious play lists of everything from Yo-Yo Ma / Zappa / Rachmaninoff / Captain Beefheart / Segovia / Mingus and yes even Jaco and most points in between.

I've got you covered except for the Charlie Mingus whom I don't have in my personal collection but do hear on the local jazz station, KSDS.

We have similar tastes in music DJ. I think it was you that had a link to the great Django Reinhardt in their signature line.

It took me a while to understand Mingus frankly. I was always drawn to electric over stand up bass, but once I had Goodbye Pork Pie Hat transcribed for me I was hooked on his composing.

Every bass player has heard of and fears him Mack.

I’ve seen him many times with the Flecktones and he never fails to amaze. I don’t normally prefer the slap players, but he can play any style; although he’s most known for his funk work.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones live are about as enjoyable as it gets for anyone who appreciates truly great musicians who are also great people.

Here they are recently on NBC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFzZXvivo4c

I'm always 10 years, at least, behind on things, been checking out this Compay Segundo all day today....one look and it was clear this guy had it all figured out.

He explained his longevity simply: mutton consommé and a drink of rum.

From what I've seen, too few of us Yanks know how really charming & soulful Cuban music is.

I've talked quite a few folk into getting a percussion instrument even if they're not musical.

Spending a little time every now & then with yourself a conga, a couple pencils, on your desk, or whatever and a good Cuban track turned loud, is an awfully cathartic thing to do. Give it a whirl sometime.

Great clip Chick…

So true Mack: I have an earlier version of this, but if your neighbors have issues with a live drum sound pads like this (and headphones) are a great way to unleash frustration after a DQ.

Yes, if I recall correctly, it was a link to a YouTube video until it was taken down.

I've added another radio station to my pandora account for Charlie. Love that it magically appears on my Sonos system.
