Does anyone have any figures that would show the total handle from Aqueduct Race track in the mid 1960's? I remember that the attendance during the week especially Mondays was 20,000 plus and some Saturdays 50,000.

I want to confirm a ball park figure of the handle and attendance. I remember that the New York tracks led the nation in per capita betting...possibly $134 per person in attendance. I would just like to confirm this.

Thank you in advance for any responses.

Don't forget to inflation adjust the per capita if you are comparing to current figures.

To adjust 1966 dollars to 2009 dollars multiply by 6.57. The $134 figure would be $880 today. I actually thought it would be higher than 6.57 considering the inflation we had in 1970s.

Holy Moly! Where is everyone today?

Playing lotto or betting from home or an OTB. None of that was around back then.

It used to be that you needed to leave home for the track early to get a good seat. 20,000+ crowds weren't uncommon at AP into the early 80's. Their on-track handle then rivals today's including off-track,inter-track, and ADWs

To put that daily attendance figure into perspective the NY Yanks averaged 13,715 per game and the NY Mets averaged 23,860 in 1966.
Only one MLB team (LA Dodgers) drew more per game. Unbelievable. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/1966-misc.shtml

I haven't looked it up, but the Cubs probably averaged 6-8000-maybe less .Before cable tv, Wrigley Field was pretty much a ghost town.
