I thought I remembered something about Tim Ice trying Summer Bird on the turf in the morning back in June, maybe. The upshot was SB didn't like it and Ice wasn't going to be trying it again. Looking at the workout line on the JCGC pps, it wouldn't have been a timed work. Does anyone else have a memory of this?

Normal searches don't seem to be helpful.

I don't think he worked him on the turf but he has worked on the proride and he went very well over it. But that was a long time ago and he obviously was a late bloomer.

Thought I remembered it. Just had the month seriously wrong.
Looking ahead to a possible start on the grass in the fall, trainer Tim Ice had Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Summer Bird (http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/thoroughbred/summer-bird/2006?source=BHonline) galloped the morning of Aug. 12 over the Oklahoma turf course as part of his preparations for the $1 million Shadwell Travers (gr. I) Aug. 29 at Saratoga Race Course.

“I’m going to keep him on the dirt right now; I didn’t like the way he looked over the turf,” said Ice. “He didn’t look comfortable. He doesn’t look like the same horse going on the turf than going over the dirt. I wanted to see what his reaction would be. Some horses don’t like it; some horses do.”
