Two days ago Obama was crowing at the UN about the great changes he's brought about in US policy, specifically closing the Gitmo detention center was supposedly one of his big acheivements. In the very first days of his presidency Obama breathlessly announced that Gitmo would be shut down within a year. When asked for the plan as to how the shutdown would be accomplished, he said they would work that out. Well in the ensuing eight months they've released some of them, sent some to The Bahama's unbeknownst to Great Britain, and threatened to bring them all in to the US prison system. In other words a complete flop as none of these were good options. They were warned not to set a deadline for closure by the previous administration, but did not heed those warnings.

Now, two days after taking credit for somehow singlehandedly remaking the US into a respected nation again, it is announced in the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/24/AR2009092404893.html?hpid=topnews)that the deadline will not be met, that White house counsel Greg Craig who had been handling the effort is stepping aside, and that they are admitting missteps. Of course, they are also blaming the BUSH administration as much as possible, but that is no surprise to anyone.

This is a prime example of inexperience and hubris, and of a man in way over his head.
And three cheers to staterun media for holding off with this story until after the UN speech. You serve your master well, and you will be rewarded.

White House Regroups on Guantanamo

Counsel Craig Replaced as Point Man on Issue as Deadline for Closing Looms

With four months left to meet its self-imposed deadline for closing the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Obama administration is working to recover from missteps that have put officials behind schedule and left them struggling to win the cooperation of Congress.

Even before the inauguration, President Obama's top advisers settled on a course of action they were counseled against: announcing that they would close the facility within one year. Today, officials are acknowledging that they will be hard-pressed to meet that goal.

The White House has faltered in part because of the legal, political and diplomatic complexities involved in determining what to do with more than 200 terrorism suspects at the prison. But senior advisers privately acknowledge not devising a concrete plan for where to move the detainees and mishandling Congress

Some of us said that it wouldn't be closed anytime soon. Others believed in Mr. Hopeandchange.

Obama's campaign and now his administration have been misleading the public for a couple of years now. The B.S. started when he decided to run for President, continued through the primaries, and still haunts us to this day. I hope people are paying attention and act accordingly in the next election!
