Are these meant to be boxes or partial wheels???

If they are boxes, each one costs $12 so the investment is $48 for each race.

If they are partial wheels, (a) your calculation of the cost at $12 each is way off and (b) I can't see any underlying philosophy as you introduce certain horses for third only (for example), remove them from running fourth, and have your prime contenders only in sporadic positions. ???

yeah, your right, geeesshh, I dont know I guess what Im doing. Never knew, you cant take 5 horses for each leg, and they make a differance from 1-8th horse, and so on. Thanks Mark, dededee I am..
