Outside of KY, which places in North America are considered as producing the classiest horses?

Based on the current Triple Crown races, I'd have to say New York.

well if you measure it by average class numbers that run you get:

I think the order would more or less be:

1. Kentucky
2. Florida
3. California
4. Maryland
5. New York

At any rate, Florida is certainly #2.

if you go buy average class of the winners only, you get:

Actually, this can go on forever..if you really want to know, and you know what independent variables you wish to measure, you know my email address

Just 1 brief remark concerning track class .... NY is considered
in the top category, the A list, with most Calif tracks. New Jersey,
B at best. Yet, when I see the "class" NY horse in a Monmouth
or Meadowlands race, I give them 1 black mark. And the NY horses are bet very heavily but --- in my mid -- rarely win. It's
very different racing and the AQU-BEL-SAR connections don't seem
to matter.

I think Delaware is over Maryland.. Pimlico and Laurel horses that ship over to Delaware get killed.

I thought this thread was about breeding. It appears that most people read this as "Which states have the classiest racing."

In terms of breeding, it is very difficult to measure. WHile Kentucky certainly appears to have the best bred horses, it certainly does not show in their statebred races. Of course, that is quite logical because the "best of kKentucky" ships to California and New York as soon as possible.

Dave Schwartz

The Jockey Club Fact Book (http://home.jockeyclub.com/factbook/index.html) has some fascinating stats. In terms of foal crop the rankings are:

1. Kentucky
2. Florida
3. California
4. Texas
5. New York

Mr. Hamilton,

Please, elaborate. I'm interested in how you arrived at these numbers and what do they mean? Does the number of int. graded races enter into your track class calculations?

its all averages, calculated by Access. I queried track, TSN Class Number and averaged All the Class numbers for that track, then found the largest and smallest single class for each track. Then I counted the number of horses in the sample (incorrectly in the first table)..anyways, fairly straightforward stuff if you have your db set up like a chart instead of pp's in the drf.

Larry Hamilton

the first table answers the question, what is the class number average for those who ran at this track. The second table answers the qeustion what is the class number average for those who WON at this track. With this technique you can answer any question you have data for, including state of breeding.

Yes,

My question is about breeding. Another way to state the question is, "Which states have the highest level of competition in their state-bred races, assuming other conditions are equal?" I realize Kentucky is a special case because it is the center of the industry...
