I managed to hit the tri in a race at Belmont today; a 1-1 wins, a 7.5-1 shot runs 2nd and a 47-1 shot runs third. The payoff? $170 and change for $2. ??? I was anticipating a payoff in the $300-$350 range. $170 seems shockingly low.

How in the world did Spoken Fur pay $13 at CD today? I couldn't stay around to bet that race but a sharp 3YO coming off 2 wins takes on a horse coming out of an overrated Grade 3 and another contender who jumped to a 100 plus Beyer at Keeneland in its last.

I have seen this happening more and more this year (your low priced tri) I think there are a bunch of players from home now days who have learned to hit the "all" button on the back end of a couple of favorites. It happens especially in the races where the field is short and the ticket is cheap.

Since those two horses were so much favored to win and /or stay in the money, they would have the most tickets in the pool.Even with a long shot running third, thats why the payoff is so low.Ands remember the pool is finite,so even with longshots it depends on how many winning tickets there are,not the odds of the horses.

Then there was the second at BEL today: if you would have boxed the 3 top ave Bris speed figs (over last 180 days) two 66's and a 65 (next closest was 61,58,57) you would have hit a $3550 tri. Go figure.

Bill

BTW they finished in order 66,66,65

Re: That 2nd race at Bel. Did you notice the owner (SACKATOGA STABLE) and the trainer (BARCLAY TAGG). They're sure getting a lot of mileage out of that 3-horse stable!

Not certain that trifecta payoff was all that out of line (Bel 4th), in fact it may have been a bit generous.
The tri paid roughly 12 times what the Exacta did, and the horse that ran 3rd already had run to a 3rd placing 4 prior times in a 17 race career. (Career Box 17-M-1-4)
Sometimes win odds aren't a reliable indicator of what percentage of play a horse is getting in an alternate placing.
Truth is, if you had the average horseplayer pick a horse to run 3rd (not show, but run 3RD)..this 47-1 shot was quite possibly the most logical pick for that particular finish position.
