Why bet place?

Does the place pool serve in decision making?

I do well catching horses that push the pace and all assume "Well he'll come back to the field," and they often DO NOT running second at longer prices than the winner paid.

Betting win and place is fine if the Horse is 5-1 or more. In my opinion you never want to just play to place unless you are making some sort of parlay.

I play 1 unit win and 3 units place a lot - if I get 9-2 or better.
The answer to your question lies in your records - if there is money to be made, enough said. Mine tell me I run seconds about twice as much as I win on longer priced horses.

If you bet overlays, nothing beats winning when you lose.

I bet 1 unit to win and two units to place. A $3.00 mutuel breaks you even but anything more shows a profit.

My average place price is 4.80, so even if I lose, I win!
