What I think has not been discussed is how great for racing a Funny Cide victory would be over the long term. If he does win the Triple Crown or even if he doesn't there will be a horse running for the next few years which the public will know and will root for.
The way racing is structured now the goal is to win the Kentucky Derby, run a couple of more times and then head off to the breeding shed for the big bucks. How many great 3 year olds run at 4? Virtually none. The public has no chance to get attached to a horse. Imagine if Secretariat ran until he was 8.
For example, how many non-horseplayers remember F. Pegasus or even Point Given? None. But they will remember Funny Cide as the horse that won the KD and is still racing years later.
