Here are my selections for Friday's late Pick 3/4:

Race 6 - MSW
(6) Billions Boy – Was added to our Horses to Watch list right after finishing 2nd in his debut on July 11. He was within striking distance early in a pretty quickly run race and rallied well into the turn as he was still getting to the winner late. Another positive from that effort is the fact that the horse that finished 3rd that day came back to win. Billions has had 5 weeks to recover from his debut effort and has worked well. He figures to come back with another big effort today.

(7) Pendulum – Has the advantage of having already run 2 races so he should have more “bottom” to his level of conditioning. However, although both career races are good, he comes back here in this spot in just 11 days from his last effort. That usually is not enough time to turn a 2-year-old around because although the last effort was good he still might need more time to recover from that effort. His numbers are there and if he improves off his 2 career starts he will be very tough to beat. However can he improve off just 11 days is the question?

(9) Bridgetown – Turned in a very good debut effort back in June for a trainer that has very good stats for horses making their 2nd career starts as well as horses running in turf sprints. He has been working well and figures to improve off his debut effort however the fact that he hasn’t raced in 49 days is a bit of a concern.

Race 7 – OPC
(3) Radical Sabbatical – Turned in 3 very good efforts in his last 3 starts and has had a freshening before headed to Saratoga. He has worked very well for a trainer that knows how to crank them up for a big effort.

(7) Valtrus – Has turned in a deceptively good campaign this spring as he fought out some tough efforts at several different turf courses. He figures to return with another big effort.

(2) Pick Six – Turned in 2 very good efforts in his last 2 starts and figures to be on or very near the early lead in a rather pace-less field. Right now he has been running at his best and has to be respected for that especially against a suspect group.

Race 8 – Hall of Fame Grade II
(1) Straight Story – Looks like a tiger on grass as he has had 4 career starts on grass and has 2 wins and missed twice by a head. He comes out of 2 graded stakes and although he is a state-bred he has proven that he can run with at least this bunch.

(8) Courageous Cat – Went from breaking his Maiden to beating a stakes field home about 3 weeks ago. Seems to have a lot of upside and has to be respected because we don’t know his top yet. Drew a tough post and might be used up a little too much in the early going.

(2) No Inflation – Has only 1 grass win but has battled in every grass start and against some very talented and deep fields and on several different courses. He has early speed and the ability to rate. He has drawn a great post position in this spot.

Race 9 – Claiming
(5) Four Star Bo – Has a win over turf and finds himself back on grass after several tries on dirt. Efforts in June were solid and might be meeting weaker in this spot.

(7) Into the Wind – Shipped and dropped in pursuit of an easy spot and made a strong move but hung late. That was his 2nd off the layoff and with that race under his belt he should be able to give his top effort here.

(10) Find the Wire – Turned in a big effort last time out over a course that was favoring early speed that day. He should improve off this last effort.

(2) Holiday Trip – Has had a race over this track which was his 1st off a layoff and should improve off that initial effort.

I don't play Saratoga but I enjoyed your analysis. Just one comment: As a man who has handled a fair number of 2-year olds on the training end, I would say not to be afraid of a quick turnaround time on a healthy colt. The younger horse's recuperative powers are much better than older horses in general as long as he is healthy, eating, and in general good spirits. More likely to stop a 2-year old is unsoundness, so the reputation and quality of the trainer is important, but if he's competent on that score, I'd expect a good performance from the colt in question.
