Hello all...

Been awhile since I posted. Was hoping to get some information on the bris .DRF single file data fields. It appears that bris has added data fields to the single file format .drf file structure. They have not updated the file structure information on the site. Perhaps some of you programmers can chime in.

The following fields are supposed to be reserved for future use, however there is deffinately data in them. Does any body here know what data these fields contain, and if they might be useful?

Field #'s
219 - 223
376 - 385
1268 - 1277
1278 - 1327
1413 - 1417

Any help is greatly appreciated!

As I've said many times, I use EXCEL 2007 to parse the file.
It does this flawlessly without any column limitations.

I have created a simple spreadsheet that allows you to open the file in notepad and paste into a single cell and then run a simple text to coulumns macro to parse the data... It Works Fantastic. :)

I'm hoping to set up a query so that I dont have to copy and paste it in the next version.

If anyone would like a copy of the file, message me and give me your email address... I'll send you a copy. It even has a test report that can be edited to your hearts content. You will need EXCEL 2007 to open it and try it for yourself. It wont work with other versions.

Thanks,
John

I wish I had an answer for you. Have tried for years to get an answer from BRIS but have never received a reply to any of my emails.

I think some of the fields are used by their past performance generator software. Like printing in italic the name of horses (in 1st, 2nd and 3rd horse names field) who have won their next race. That information must be somewhere in that data file but no mention to it in their reference and no reply to questions.

Hope someone here has some answers.

376-385 is the name of the race, if one exists.

1268-1277 appears to be a date value used in the indented line typically used to indicate chang of owner.

1278 - 1327 appears to be the race record (total-wins-places-shows) that appears in parenthesis as a part of the indented additional information line.

1413 - 1417 (?; 1422?) appears to be the win percentage from the total-win-place-show numbers in the previous field.

219 - 223 I think is the jockey/trainer (JT) lifetime stats.

DJ,
Thank you very much! for taking the time to look at these fields and letting me know what they appear to be.
If you are correct then, they really wouldnt serve a purpose for my style of handicapping.

Several people have requested my workbook and I have shared it with them.
I hope they find it useful.
One person asked me why they only got 256 columns of data.
Let me reiterate... You Need To Have EXCEL 2007.
Older versions are limited to 256 columns.

If you are serious about using Excel as a handicapping tool, you should
really look into updating your version of Excel.
With it, there are no limits to what you can create.

I just zipped up my workbook up and I'm going to attemp to attach it here. If for some reason PA will not allow it... Just send me a message with your email address and I'll email it to you. Once you get it, make sure to follow the instructions carefully. You will have to enable macros for it to run automatically, so I'm not going to garantee your results. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks again DJ!

John

Isn't it amazing that the data companies sell us data and then won't tell us what we bought?

I emailed Bobby Rosenberg at Brisnet and complained about the new data in the files and the lack of data information in the file structures.

He replied:

Raybo,

Thanks for taking the time to email them and let them know that us users and customers deserve a simple explanation of what it is in the data we are paying for. The other day, a friend of mine, who is also an Excel geek and handicapper told me that he believs these fields are experimental at best and that we should not worry about it yet. DJofSD replied above with some logical information as well. His guess on the fields he believe is combined Trainer/Jockey stats would definately be noteworthy in my opinion.

Thanks again for taking the time to ask about it... and posting the response.
Hopefully, we will get some answers in the near future.

No problem, I was not aware of the new additions and, having written my control file to include all 1435 data fields, it would be nice to know what all those fields contain.

Concerning whether or not the new fields are experimental, my experience with Brisnet is that when new data filters down to the .drf files, those fields have already been in higher cost files. I don't believe you will ever see anything really "new" in the $1 .drf files.
