Funny Cide is a year older than Commentator. 2000 and 2001. With the relaxed definition of NYBred so many mares are shipping to KY to get covered and then come back to NY to foal and they are considered NYBreds. There are really only a handful of true NY stallions hanging around. Just look at the number of times you see Freud as the sire in younger state breds.

I know he stands at Winstar in KY right now. I believe was there when Funny Cide was bred also. I don't remember if he was ever a truly NY stallion. I know he has been in Versaailes for quite awhile. Somebody else more in tune with the breeding game could shed more light.
