My new Canon printer is needing a new toner.
Where is the best place to buy this.
Do "compatible" ones work?
Thanks in advance. I knew my toner in the new machine wouldn't last long, but it went faster than I thought. I've been told the new ones I replace it with will last much longer.
I have been doing a lot of printing.....
Thanks in advance.

Diane,
The printer companies put "starter" cartridges into new printers. Much lower capacity that the ones you pay for (yes they do tell you that ... it's in the fine print  ). I've always used office store replacements (Office Depot etc.) with my HP and have had no trouble at all. Typically they are quite a bit cheaper. I also use the higher capacity cartridge (my printer takes a 2500 page and a 4000 page capacity cartridge) which is cheaper yet per page. Of course as they say "your mileage may vary" :)

Thanks, Bill, I was warned.
My printer is still working fine....just a warning note that the cartridge is getting low.
I'm going to Costco to buy a new one, should I just keep printing on this one till lines show up on the pages?
Thanks, Bill
How have you been? Have you been playing Del Mar?

When the print fades, take the cartridge out and shake it side to side. That should give you a few extra days. Keep doing that until it doesn't work anymore (or, you just get sick and tired of doing that :) ) then replace it with the new one.
Caveat: I'm not familiar with the newest printers, they may have a sensor that shuts down the printer when it thinks the cartridge is low (that would suck!). Others may want to chime in here.

I have tried "office store" replacements a couple of times -- NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. I mentioned this to the people at the office store, and they pretty much confirmed that they suck. So be careful with those.

GT,
What kind of trouble?

GT,
What kind of trouble? On an inkjet, constantly jammed nozzles causing printing with missing bits, etc. Had to run the cleaning cycle all the time but never seemed to fix it. It fact, it seemed my Canon inkjet was never the same after using one of those even after going back to Canon ink (and I had gone through many Canon cartridges before trying the generic with no trouble). That was a couple of years ago -- never again. And then about 10 years earlier I had tried one on an Epson inkjet with similar problems. (I figured in the intervening decade maybe they had improved, so I gave it a go on the Canon. Mistake.)
My current printer is a Brother inkjet -- crispest I've ever seen. Hopefully I can keep it that way.

I think the best thing to do is order it online. Just order two so you have a spare, and when one goes dry, order another one. That seems to be the most cost effective alternative.

Just to be clear, I was talking about a laser printer toner cartridge (especially the shaking side to side thing  )

I've used Printpal.com for several years and had good luck with their laser carts. They will send you a 10% off plus free shipping coupon at the drop of a hat (I get one about once a week), so ask.

Bill,
I checked my toner, it's still pretty full, just getting low.
Soon as it gets down a bit more, we'll try the shaking, can't hurt.
I'll let you know if it works, probably will.
In the meantime, I have a new Canon 104 toner cartridge.
I ususally don't do this much printing. During Del Mar John doesn't work down there, so we don't get the free PPs from the press box.
I have to print most of them out, I bought the Del Mar deal....for a dollar a day.
I also print out work sheets, about 9 pages 4 or 5 times a week.
That's about it, I could have kept my old Epson, but this new Laser is wonderful....I just love it.
Thanks everyone for the printer tips.

Ok, so then my official stance is to stay away from generic ink, but I have it on good authority, i.e. Bill, that generic laser is ok.

With the YMMV caveat. I haven't had any problems in the years that I've had this printer (HP laserjet 1300) BUT is that a statistically significant sample size? not really!
I was burnt once by a real HP cart (had it in storage past the return date and found it bad - had to eat it) but as always you rolls the dice and you takes your chances.

My sister works for a office supply type company and she sends me "generic" carts for my laser printer, more than half the price off the Brother original I would get at Office Depot or online and I have never had a problem.
Years ago I did have a problem with a inkjet generic not working, but for past 3yrs I have had no problem with the laser, and I go through 1 a month.
