With 4 minutes to post in 8th race at Monmouth.....3 horse field

The board read..

1/1
3/2
8/5

If there was no takeout and no breakage....each horse having equal chance with equal money bet....board would read

2/1
2/1
2/1

quite a difference

Yesterday River Downs had a field scratch down to three runners. The winner paid $2.80. There was no place or show betting, but there was an exacta that paid $3.00, and a trifecta that paid less than that: $2.80, illlustrating the bigger rake.

If that odds board was in effect for Pie Oh My's last win, even Paulie Walnuts would have left the track early and not made a bet.

At least not through the tracks tote. ;)

In Monmouth's 8th if you bet the Silly Goose horse (poster here) you got $7 back for your deuce but if you wheeled her in exacta's you hit a $14.40 exacta.

In the 7th they had 4 horses and actually took superfecta bets? $12 return for a $1 bet in a four horse field? Wonder how many newbies at the track boxed all four thinking they couldn't lose. :bang:
