What percentage of horses win in the race where they were claimed ?

2009 to date, all horses:

5517 horses claimed
1507 won
1076 finished 2nd
776 finished 3rd

27%W and 47% WP...much higher than I would have guessed.

There are many places that don't make you move a horse up after a claim. I wonder what the win percentage is when you look at a claimed horse that moves up in class and races within 30 days.

I'd say the win percentage would drop off to around 22% but the place percentage may still be the same because usually horses in good form are claimed and they probably still run good off the claim just due to that.

The 27% makes sense now, it is around what favorites win at, and usually the horses claimed are in great form and are one of the favorites.
Of course, it is best to hope for a conditioned horse to lose the race it is claimed in, and some outfits purposely claim horses where there is a good likelihood the horse will lose in such an event.
