Has anyone compared the usefuleness of the Equibase class ratings to those from BRIS? I've found the BRIS numbers very useful in the past but have been wondering about the equibase numbers.

Last year I downloaded some free PP from Equibase for either the Belmont or Preakness. Was shocked how much Equibase Speed Figs varied from BRIS, Cramer, Beyer, and Quirin. They did not even come close. If I recall correctly, Fu Peg had the top figures from all of the above except from Equibase where he was ranked 5th best speed figure in the field. Dunno if that is a reflection of how accurate of their class ratings might be but BRIS is pretty solid.

I agree about the speed numbers. I get them in my track programs and never use the equibase speed figs for Thoroughbreds.
I've found that the equibase speeds do have some utility in, dare I say, quarterhorse handicapping. (Now "quarterhorse handicapping," that may be an oxymoron!)

Hi GR1. When you talk about speed figs. you mention Cramer amongst Beyer, Quirin and BRIS.
Could you tell me where (or in what books) Cramer goes into detail about making and using (final time) figs.?
Cheers

Aussieplayer,
To my knowledge Cramer has not written any books. However, he has one of the largest databases out there, writes statistical based articles for Barry Meadow Newsletter, and is a pricipal behind www.horsedata.com.
Have no idea how he developes his figs. Below is a link to how the figure performs.

BTW, have you read Beyer on Speed by Andy Beyer? He has a chapter or two on his experiences using speed figures down under.
I think there are two Crammers being mentioned here-Jim Crammer, of HDW I believe, and Mark Crammer,
the kinky one with the newsletter.
