Hollywood track announcer Stauffer hospitalized

by Steve Schuelein

Vic Stauffer, track announcer at Hollywood Park and agent for meet-leading jockey Joel Rosario, was hospitalized at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank, California, and was undergoing tests on Sunday.

Stauffer, 50, was admitted Saturday night, complaining of weakness after attending a concert with his fiancée.

Ed Burgart, track announcer at Los Alamitos, pinch-hit for Stauffer behind the mike at Hollywood Park Sunday.

My father had suffered from some minor strokes. We did not find out about them for some time after they had occured. When he had complained he just did not feel like himself, a weekend in the hospital for a battery of tests finally revealed the cause.

He recovered completely.

Hang in there, Vic. Everyone is pulling for you.

CVA's at his age must have an underlying cause: hypertension, A-V malformation, cherry aneurysms, hyper-coaggulation problems etc.

Too young for the classical thrombotic or embolic CVA.

Hemorrhagic ones you don't survive too often.

This is the latest update this afternoon on Vic.

Stauffer hospitalized

Vic Stauffer, the Hollywood Park track announcer and agent for leading rider Joel Rosario, was hospitalized on Saturday evening and did not call the races on Sunday.

Stauffer was thought to have suffered "a mini-stroke," track officials said, but a complete diagnosis had not been made. Stauffer underwent tests on Sunday and was released late Sunday afternoon. His place in the announcer's booth on Sunday was taken by Ed Burgart, who calls races at nearby Los Alamitos.

Stauffer was in contact with officials on Sunday afternoon, discussing race results. He told track officials that he hoped to return to race calling on Thursday, the next live racing day.

Rosario won the first three races on Sunday, including the Hollywood Juvenile on Necessary Evil, a filly who beat males.

A "ministroke" ? What the hell? Haven't had one of those since I was 13 and stole my dad's Playboy!

Seriously though. You'll all never know how much your kind words and well wishes have meant to myself and my family.

Tina has been copying and giving me all the messages from all the sites and believe me I could actually feel a positive physical reaction.

I'm feeling MUCH better. Freaky thing boy. The doctors say it's isolated and passed so I'm ready to roll on Thursday.

I'll tell you one thing for sure. It'll be nice to have just one job till the fall. I know I've obsessed way too much about trying to be leading rider with Joel.

We'll still work hard but by then I know I'll have learned to reconcile it better and take more time to just rest and relax with my family.

Again. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU so much for everything. Your kindness has been humbling.

Let's go get em Thursday!

The double duty had to take its toll, but how does it work when you are at Santa Rosa and Joel is at Del Mar? I know that handling a jock's book requires a good deal of hustle, but that commute is somewhat excessive.

So glad to hear you're doing well and ready to roll for Thursday's call.

On another related note, my girlfriend had so much fun at Hollywood (much because of your hospitality), that she suggested she take me to Del Mar for a few days next month to celebrate my 40th birthday (yep, she's a keeper!).

I think when we were in the booth with you, you told us about an upcoming trip of yours to Hawaii. Hopefully, that is still on and will be a nice relaxing respite for you.

Winning money is winning money no matter how it's done. Whether it's through the windows, contests or whatever it is.

Well done sir.

Those contests bring out the toughest people to be against. The pool is "sharky" to say the least. Nice score, good job.

As far as I'm concerned those contests are harder than betting.

We're very similar except you're better looking, more intelligent and a lot more wealthier.

Praise I'm not sure I deserve but am truly humbled by.

Thanks Mark.

Love to see you guys put up a good sized tourney at the Mountain.

I'd make it a priority to play.

Under just one condition.

You and Nancy are not eligible.

Just heard on TVG that Vic had a minor stroke last night. Get well soon Vic, miss hearing you call today.
Hang in there Vic; I just came out of a 17 day hospital stay so I can somewhat sympathize with what you might be facing.

Again, I wish you well with a speedy and full recovery.

That is a very nice sentiment, but Vic's stroke was years ago. Fortunately, he does appear to have made both a speedy and full recovery.

This thread is one of those that started years ago and was then resurrected.

BTW, congratulations to you Vic. You look to be a very sharp player, but I would still like to see you goofing on somebody's roof in the future.

Cest La Vie. Off to Big Sandy.

And as many Broadway shows I can possibly get to. :jump: Let's go!

Vic has been a success in whatever he has done in his life. he was a great announcer at Hollywood and Gulfstream. he kick started the career's of Matt Garcia and Joel Rosario. now he is becoming a great horse race handicapping tournament player. whatever he puts his mind on he excells with it and he has plenty of heart to boot. he is also a very kind and charitable person. if there is ever a man that deserves all this good fortune, its him.

You once said to me how you abhor trolling yet that's exactly what your posts in this thread have been. EXACTLY.

There isn't any hook to be let off you clown.

We're? I didn't ask anybody tout anything. I appreciate kind words of course.

However, You're not Mike Wallace and this isn't 60 minutes.

Go bother another thread. You've contributed nothing to this one.

Not trolling...just pointing our even God loses one every once in a while...and that was a pretty hefty and very quick loss...

But I admire the balls it takes to enter into a $20,000 ($15,000 live bankroll) real money tournament...for that you are to be commended no doubt.

I really don't understand the reason(s) the way this thread is trending.

But lately, instead of telling some others off which has been my first reaction, I've been going to the Home page and replaying the BCC and PC races and after only about 10 minutes have found everything is right again.
